Save Money With These 10 Budget Snacks

August 5, 2014   4 Comments

I walk into the grocery store and manage to spend $100 without breaking a sweat.

Best Budget Snacks 2014

I am not buying $20 aged cheese or $6 per pound peaches, but I am feeding a family of four. My son inhales 2-3 bananas a day (I am not joking) and I cannot keep up with his consumption.

It is important not to sacrifice quality simply because you are broke. Keep in mind that nuts are best in small quantities and are a nutritional powerhouse. One pound of almonds ($9) can go a long way if you are sticking to a one ounce portion (56 cents per portion).

This list is a group of snacks that are healthy, easy to make, and most are less expensive per portion than buying a small bag of Doritos (and much better for you – duh!):

Cold coffee, almond milk, honey, cocoa powder, ice, blender (dissolve the cocoa powder in some of the almond milk first, you can heat it in the microwave first)

great ideas!

i can add what i tried yesterday: 3 cups of well ground branflax or other cereal, 3 table spoons of small raisins, quarter of cup any nuts also ground but coarsly. mix together. then heat 100 dark chocolate in the microwave with 3 table spoons of water or milk, just about one minute or less until you are able to mix it well and melted, add 2-3 table spoons of butter and mix everything together. lay on a flat utensile, pyrex or anything else, flaten the mass and cover with clinging foil or aluminum and fridge. makes for rather nice bars. a good idea for using old cereal.

Some great ideas. I have never seen peaches for $6 a pound though! I thought our white peaches at nearly $2 a pound was expensive. Bananas are cheap, and during the summer you can freeze some of them too just so you don't run out.

There are so many ways to make pizza including making your own crust from flour or cauliflower.

Also, you can use pita bread or flour tortillas. They make an excellent foundation for topping and flour tortillas can often be found in the monster size.

Note to self, when title includes a number it's a list of old posts. Note to Snack Girl, I'd rather see no post at all than a rehash.
