More Than 7 Million Copies Sold!

I know you think I’m talking about “Shades of Grey”, but I am not (at least not today).

Foods That Heal Review

“Foods that Harm, Foods That Heal: What to Eat to Beat Disease and Live Longer” is a mega-selling health book because it is a sane repository of information on the effect of different foods on your health.

For example, today I ate fresh strawberries (yum!). What do they heal? According to this book:

  • Cancer
  • Diabetes
  • Brain function
  • High Cholesterol
  • High Blood Pressure
  • Birth Defects
  • Macular Degeneration
  • Constipation
  • Aging Skin

Holey moley! I thought I was just eating breakfast. I do have one of these ailments – aging skin. Yes, my skin doesn’t seem to want to get younger, even when I pour moisturizer on it. How do strawberries help cure aging skin?

The anthocyanins in berries may even prevent some of the effects of aging, such as skin damage from ultraviolet light. Studies have also shown that ellagic acid may also repair skin damaged by the sun.

Yes! Take that Oil of Olay.

As you continue on your healthier journey, it can be fun to know the latest in research on how whole foods can help you. There is a list of ailments and food cures that are good to know about. For example, the book addresses sexual dysfunction with foods that improve blood flow (garlic). Of course, after eating a clove of garlic, who is going to want to kiss you?

Don’t worry! On page 270, the cure for halitosis is chewing on fennel seeds. Hurray!

Do not underestimate the power of healthy food. It can do more than get you slimmer and there are so many reasons other than "my mother told me to eat this" for you to eat your vegetables.

Please share your food cures.

Got to try that garlic-fennel thing! Will let you know.

Lisa, I just love your website. Heading to Costco to get a case of fresh strawberries. Judy

I'm making breakfast right now- I have strawberries in my fridge- thanks for the inspiration to use them up today :)

I love ginger for when I have a stomach ache. I drink rooibus (red) tea with honey when my allergies are bad, miso soup when I'm sick (I swear, the broth just knocks a cold out flat, or at least gives me a good placebo), and an apple when I'm exhausted and shouldn't have caffeine.

These are all much better than my mom's cure for ailments when I was a kid--luke warm Dr. Pepper. According to her, it cured everything from a stomach ache to broken bones! Disgusting! I hated Dr. Pepper so much that I would fake healthy just to keep from having to chug it. I still can't stand it!

Be careful to only eat organic strawberries, since the non-organic are one of the fruits with an exceptionally high level of pesticides. It's a case where you're eating the whole fruit and they're harder to clean with their seeds on the outside and their delicate nature. Additionally, the flavor of the organic strawberries is superior.

I'm having fresh stawberries right now - it's my mid-morning snack!

There is a phrase: "The food system is healthcare, While the healthy system is sickcare." I stopped getting urinary tract infections 4 years ago simply by eating naturally probiotic yogurt. Since then, I have treated headaches, ulcers, and anxiety all with the right foods. By the way, garlic is the most powerful antibiotic, period. It is more effective than prescription drugs.

(Of course, for more serious problems, see a doctor - preferably a naturopath.)

I have come to realize the old saying, "You are what you eat" is sooooo true. If you eat s _ _ t you will look like s_ _ t and feel like it, too. Low processed, "clean" food is always the best. Sweet treats are ok now and then, but a steady diet of overprocessed fake food will just make you feel lousy and look lousy. I realize this is a general statement about good eating choices, but that's one of the best health regimes.

Darn I was hoping the "7 Million copies sold" referred to pre-orders of your upcoming book. ;)

Organic farms are inspected maybe once very ten years if that so just buy strawberries - once the inspector leaves, the farm can do what it wants and you pay extra for "organic" and there is no proof the farm is running by organic standards. Unless you KNOW the grower or ARE the grower, no guarantees!

I always wonder about these claims, and the ones a famous Dr. On TV say works. Does anyone really know how much of an item you would have to eat to actually receive the claims made? I am betting more than you would think.

I love reading books like this to inspire me to eat better.

I used to always get bloat-y on planes until I started taking along green tea bags to brew and kombucha. I don't know if there is official scientific proof of this but it helps me:)

avocado every day- helps with my joint stiffness. I can tell when I don't have it, when I get out of bed, it is more difficult to get moving.
