Try Some Real Food For Halloween

October 7, 2015   5 Comments

I am so intimidated by Halloween. As an acclaimed healthy snack expert, this celebration is a difficult one to tackle.

Healthy Hhalloween Food

At Costco on Sunday, I believed that a MOUNTAIN of candy was going to fall on me at any moment. I don’t know that I have ever seen so much candy in one place before. It was scarier than the Halloween decorations. Seriously.

I am lucky because I don’t have to buy candy for Trick-or-Treaters (no one comes to our house). I suggest that you don’t buy candy either……..until October 30th so it doesn’t sit there looking at you.

A few tips:

  • Buy candy that you don’t like.
  • If there is leftover candy, give it away or toss it out.
  • If you can’t give it away then put it in the freezer where you can’t see it.

Finally, if you are entertaining on Halloween or bringing party food to school for an event – try these healthy and fun options. Last year, I brought the Mandarin pumpkins to a party and they got devoured. I was very proud of myself.

Mandarin Pumpkins

Peel mandarin oranges (smaller ones with no seeds) and shove a small stick of celery into the center to make a stem. Wrap if not serving these immediately so the mandarins don’t dry out.

Banana Ghosts

Cut banana in half and press Cheerios onto flesh. Eat immediately or soak banana in lemon juice before putting on Cheerios so they don’t turn brown.

Pretzel Brooms

Slice a cheese stick in half and cut several slices into one half of the stick. Shove end of pretzel stick into flat end of cheese stick to make a “broom”.

How do you get real food into kids on Halloween?

I LOVE your display. That is perfect Halloween food.

I was at target the other day and saw a bag of pretzel sticks with the picture and instructions on how to make the pretzel "brooms" right on the front of the package. I was rather impressed. Thankfully, I don't have to buy candy since I have to take my daughter out trick or treating and (as a single mom) no one is home to hand it out. I am, however, faced with the candy she brings home. I try to make sure she picks candy she likes so I'm not tempted to eat the stuff she doesn't like (for instance, Snickers, Twix, Milky Way). But, as you said, I store the leftovers in the freezer so they are out of sight.

The pumpkin I learned from Fully Raw Kristina, but the other too are super cute!

SO SO SO cute. Love it. This one is a must-do for my next halloween sign-up sheet. Thank you!! NO cooking, just a little prep work, and lots of good food!

Did you see the mummy french pizzas on facebook. They are made with whole wheat french bread, tomato sauce, cheese for the mummy wrap and olives for the eyes. SO CUTE
