We Can Lose the Weight Before The Holidays Together! Snack Girl Challenge

September 6, 2016   10 Comments

Want some extra motivation to get healthy and lose weight before the holidays? I have a contest for you!

healthy wage 2016

Last year, I held this challenge and got great feedback on it. I was asked to hold it again so here we go.

I have partnered with HealthyWage to offer a Snack Girl Jackpot Challenge for my readers and their friends, family and colleagues.

Here’s how it works. Sign up with a buddy to form a team of 2, or gather some friends, family members, and/or co-workers to form a team of 3 to 9. You can build a team or we can help you join a team if your friends and family aren't interested.

Each participant puts money into the Jackpot ($20/mo or $60 total). Your team will be competing to lose 6% in three months. Winners (teams that lose 6% before the end) each get an equal share of the Jackpot.

For example, if you weigh 200 pounds, your goal for 12 weeks would be to lose 12 pounds. Only you know your weight and your weight loss goal (no need to share unless you want to). Hopefully, this weight loss goal is at a sustainable rate for you and you would keep up your new healthy habits through the holidays.

The sky's the limit on how big the Jackpot can grow, and each participant’s payout depends on how many people enter and how many people win. Typically, if your team hits the goal, you double your money or more.

HealthyWage is based on some important research out of Harvard, Penn and Mayo over the last few years that says, not surprisingly, that financial games with social components make us more likely to lose weight. In short, the biggest secret is your desire to avoid letting your teammates down. You wouldn’t want to be responsible for preventing your teammates from winning a share of the Jackpot.

You become motivated to make changes by winning money, helping your team, and getting healthy. This is a win-win-win!

So join us for some fun and to see who can win a share of the Jackpot. The goal: get as many people to sign up as possible, have a ton of fun and lose at least Boeing 747’s worth of pounds.

The challenge runs for 12 weeks starting on September 23, 2016, and registration is on now Snack Girl Challenge. After registering, you can either make a team or join an already-existing one.

I love this idea and had success last year, I dropped 11#, which was wonderful. I kept it off for a few months after the challenge ended, then I slowly regained after the sense of accountability was gone, that is, the weekly weigh in. How does one keep this up? I posed this question before, but no responses at that time.

It is will power after the game is over Joan, plain and simple. Keep eating the same foods and get moving. Sorry - no easy solution!

Joan, the key afterward is to find a way to motivate yourself and willpower. So, perhaps, set goals for yourself and rewar d yourself when you meet them. For instance, If your goal is to work out 5 days a week for 3 weeks, if you do it, 'reward' yourself with something that will motivate you-- manicure, pedicure, new shirt, night at the movies? etc. When you meet one goal, set another. This seems to work well for some people. Good luck!

Regaining after a loss is problematic for me too! That's why I joined Weight Watcher's and I'll never quit attending meetings! Because of that weekly weigh in. I know I've made a lot of changes to lose the weight (regular exercise, making better food/beverage choices)...and when I know I'm going to weigh in - I continue to make better choices and get that exercise in. Maintaining a better weight is what a lot of WW members do - and it still takes work and diligence for the rest of your life - since food and lack of exercise is what got us there in the first place. It becomes a way of life...not a race to achieve that goal and then quit...but a daily process to maintain and or lose weight...it's a constant process for me...Once to adopt that thinking you'll be able to manage your weight for the rest of your life.

Joan,

We all know weight is simple math: Calories consumed minus calories burned. If the answer is zero or a negative number we will maintain or lose weight. If greater than zero we will gain weight.

One idea is to hold yourself accountable for EVERY calorie, every bite, you put in your mouth. I do that by using a program you can download for your phone called "My Fitness Pal." (There are others, but I like that one. I have no connection with the company.)

You can set it up in a way that makes sense to you. I changed the settings to reflect breakfast, mid-morning, lunch, mid-afternoon, dinner, and evening because I eat 5-6 SMALL meals per day.

And then plan your food. Failure to plan is planning to fail.

Make sure you have healthy food convenient to grab; things that are HIGH protein, and low fat, sugar and carbs.

And good luck.

Sounds good! I've had great success posting my exercise goals for the month to my FaceBook friends...along the way I post an update or two...they're so supportive and I'm especially committed to making and posting my success at the end of each month!

I'm in!

The article above says teams of 4-9 and the article on the registration page says 2 can be a team. Is that true?

I did the Healthy Wage challenge twice so far. The first was with the Snack Girl group. The second time was with a member of the first group. The two of us could not find anyone else to join us, so they put us into a larger group to get the right number of participants. I think it may have been less effective for me because I did not have any connection with the others. I was less successful the second time, but I will be joining again with my Snack Girl virtual support group:)

By the way, I am a registered dietitian and Certified Diabetes Educator. I have the knowledge. Also I consistently track 10k steps daily with my Fitbit, and this has been challenging since my gym closed in June:( It is the group support and accountability that I find essential. Thanks everyone for your suggestions in response to my initial post to this topic on 9/6/16.

@Susie - you can join in a team of two - I have updated the post to reflect that change. Sorry about that! You can also join if your friends and family aren't willing.
