Looking for Great Beach Snacks?

Aaaah, the beach…..Hopefully, you have a beach near you that helps you cool off.

Snacks for the Beach

Near my house, we have a pond with a lifeguard and it saves us on hot summer days. One of the key features of this beach for my children is the “Snack Shack” which sells kale, carrots, cucumber slices…..zzzzzz…..

I must have been dreaming :)

You guys know what is at the Snack Shack! Doritos, Coke, Hot Dogs, Twizzlers, etc.

I don’t actually think that having a treat from the Snack Shack is a terrible thing. There is one person in the group who is studiously trying to avoid the frozen Snickers bars and that would be ME.

How do I avoid the Snack Shack? First, I have a groovy picnic basket/cooler which is ready to go. The key for me is to have a cold drink so I fill a water bottle with ice cubes.

I pack my basket with some cooler ice and fruit. Slices of watermelon, apples, peaches, and cantaloupe are in plastic containers and ready to eat. I also pack frozen grapes to keep everything cool and they are delicious to munch on.

The key for me is to keep everything cold so I won’t be tempted to buy something cold.

Here are some more ideas for the beach:

  8. Grab your favorite flavored yogurt and freeze it for a wonderful replacement for the larger serving size of frozen yogurt.

What do you bring to the beach? Please share.

Agree! Keeping snacks cold, fun, satisfying! I was very fortunate to live 10 mins from 4 great beaches in CT. So packing for beach excursions was practically an art. I never did live in a ''snack'' world but rather a ''meal'' world. Trunk was always beach-ready, and mudroom was lunch-ready: cooler, cups, cutlery, napkins, wetwipes, etc. Corner-counter held plasticware to fill with PBJ, cheese, fruit, salad, dressing, often shrimp cocktail, pot. or mac. salads and chips & cookies. Our main town beach has the only snack bar with candy, burgers & pizza, etc. but we went there moreso for an ice cream or popsicle BUT the big but is: I and the kids preferred the non-snack bar beaches and the food we brought. Plus these locations allowed kayaks, etc., and were more adventurous with tide pool critters.

The best memories: Happy, contented, curious, and tuckered out little ones! Enjoy Lisa!

For an all-day trip to ocean beaches from our house (about an hour and a half drive away), I like to pack quality nibbles for those using up calories in the waves -- homemade gorp with raisins, dried cranberries, dark chocolate bits, shelled nuts, cut-up pieces of Medjool dates. Of course, this is along with a cooler of sandwiches that are basic sliced turkey, cheese, good quality grainy bread, and tomato slices, red onion and fresh basil, packed separately (so no soggy sandwiches) to poke into the sandwich. Once I was holding half a sandwich and a seagull swooped down and grabbed my portion out of my hand; bet he searched for those good flavors again for the rest of his life! Also, I usually pack a jar of Teddie's Peanut Butter and some crackers and a plastic knife to have for the grandkids as late day snacks for the drive home.

How many of us in the East are still excited about these lovely warm days after the avalanche of snow we had!

Even though it’s fun to indulge once in a while, making regular trips to the “snack shack” is less than ideal. Popcorn is a great snack because it’s healthy and you can season it any way you want. However, sprinkling the popcorn with salt seems to be satisfying enough for a day at the beach!
