Simply Monitor Your Steps

I usually don’t like motivational phrases but this one is relevant.

Step Monitoring

By now you opened your gifts and perhaps you didn’t find that $100-$200 Fitbit tracker that you can link to your $500 smart phone. Waaah!

Don’t worry, I didn’t get one either and so I am forced to wonder how many steps I take a day since I can’t measure them. Or can I?

First of all, if you have a smart phone, you can download the Fitbit app for FREE and it will count your steps without a tracker. Isn’t that cool? It even sends you a weekly e-mail of your progress. The only issue is that you need to carry your phone everywhere.

Why is that a problem for me? I like to live life without carrying a phone all the time. I find it distracting when, let’s say, a person calls me to talk about work while I am grocery shopping. I do turn my phone off and carry it around but I frequently leave it in my purse or at home. I missed the call from the Dr. Oz show because my phone was turned off. Oy!

If you don’t want to lug your phone around, there are some GREAT pedometers that you can clip on to your clothing for $23. (see below)

Get one or dust off the one you already have and start measuring your steps. You can go for the goal of 10,000 steps per day or you can try to increase your steps gradually week to week. It doesn't really matter if you only walk 200 steps if you are able to increase to 210, 220, etc. until you are fitter.

Buy a small notebook and write down your steps per day and add them up weekly. You don’t need fancy phones or apps to get a general idea of your daily fitness.

A walking journal (like a food journal) can do a lot toward getting you off your couch. Give it a try in 2016!

Do you use a walking app or pedometer? How has it helped you?

I wear a Fitbit Charge HR and love it. It is very motivational. On a day without many steps it helps to get me moving, especially in the winter.

I bought a pedometer from WW and wear it every day. It keeps me motivated to walk 10,000 to 12,000 steps per day....It has helped me to stay at my goal weight by just walking and watching what I eat.

I used to have a Fitbit Flex, but then I got a Sony Smartwatch & it was too much to wear both on my wrist.

So I now use the Jawbone "Up" app on my Android smartphone that works on my watch too & it works with the "My Fitness Pal" app for logging my food. So I can still see if I "gain" calories (which I always try not to use). But I always make sure I get over my 10,000 steps per day (love walking anyway).

So I don't have to have my phone with me all the time to log the steps too, which is always useful & the watch & phone sync when they're in bluetooth range again.

Sorted!

I don't understand any of those things. Just give me the good old fashion pedometer and i'm one happy lady...

You don't have to spend a lot on a FitBit. I bought mine locally brand new in package on one of those sell apps. I was safe about it, went with someone else and met the guy outside. Best investment I've made recently. Love the challenges and it keeps me pushing to my goal. Haven't made 10,000 steps on a regular basis, but made over 30,000 one day last month volunteering at a comicon! LoL

Get the Garmin vivofit!! It has a watch battery and never needs charging. I have had mine for over a year, wear it everyday (even in the shower) and it's still going. They had them on sale on Amazon for $79 which is a lot cheaper than I got mine. It does sync to your phone and it will track your sleep - the only time I look at the sleep tracking is maybe if I'm not losing weight and eating right, I can see how much sleep I am getting.

I love it!!

I have been wearing the Fitbit One ($100)for many years. it is my motivator as I want to reach my goal each day. I don't want to wear the bracelet type on my wrist so I discreetly tuck the One in my bra and I am set.

I'm still a flip-phone holdout, and I find my little old-fashioned pedometer very helpful. A day of Christmas/grocery shopping ended up with over 17K steps. No wonder shopping is so tiring! When I was working as a teacher, I found that most days I only walked 6 or 7K by the final bell, even though I felt like I'd done more, so the pedometer was a great motivator to take a walk after work and get those final steps. I did look like a bit of a loon pacing around my house on days with bad weather, but hey--steps are steps.

Got my Up2 for less than $60. I've found the sleep tracker way more helpful than expected...even if it isn't perfect.

I love my Garmin Vivofit 2. It motivates me to get off the couch! The only bad thing is it doesn't count my steps on the treadmill or my stationery bike. Wish it could do that and then it would be perfect!

I have been a faithful Fitbit user for many years! There's really nothing like it for effortlessly keeping track of your movement, calorie deficit, and sleep patterns. I wear the Fitbit One, which sells currently for $99. It's older, and both the belt clip & sleep sleeve are a little tattered. Therefore, I asked Santa (hubby that is) for a Flex for Christmas ... which of course I got. Bummer. I thought it looked cool on the wrist ... BUT it's constantly in my way if I'm working in the kitchen or even washing my hands. Also, the lights pattern could be gotten used to, but it's nothing like being able to push the button on my One at any moment to see how many steps I've taken or calories I've burned. So the nice gift has to go back ... I will replace my One belt clip & sleep sleeve for about $30, and enjoy that the One itself is still fine. Lesson learned. While I can't say I've had any dramatic weight loss since I got my Fitbit, I really believe it's keeping me in shape & healthy, as I enter year 60!

I love my pedometer! Have worn it for years - now hoping to get 15,000 steps per day during good weather. I prefer the basic model that just track steps without having to input any info (like stride length).

I use a Fitbit - however, roughly 5 walking miles is approximately 10,000 steps. So you could use your car to track 2.5 miles from your house, and decide to walk there and back everyday and basically get your 10,000 steps in.
