Love A Salty Crunch? Top 10 Ideas for Replacing Chips

July 8, 2014   5 Comments

Everyone has their favorite treat. I happen to love potato chips.

Top Salty Crunchy Snacks

A reader sent me an e-mail asking for ideas to help her stop eating them. Fortunately, I had thought a lot about this topic.

My first line of defense for overindulging has been to buy Cape Cod 40% Reduced Fat Kettle Cooked Chips. For one serving of 140 calories, you can eat 19 chips. I like the flavor and the crunch (and they taste the same to me as regular chips).

BUT, this reader wanted to move on from potato chips and I hear her. I like to crunch on vegetables whenever possible when eating a snack but raw vegetables aren’t enough to satisfy a potato chip craving.

Some of the ideas below take a little more work than opening a bag of chips, but it is worth it for your health, right?

  1. Sliced cucumbers with salt on the side for sprinkling
  2. Carrot sticks and hummus
  3. kaleschips2b Kale Chips: The Legend Continues
  4. Sugar Snap Peas and Cheese Elegant, Easy, and Under 100 Calories
  5. Spicy Roasted Chickpeas Turn Dull Beans Into A Potato Chip Replacement
  6. Chili Lime Popcorn Give Your Popcorn A South Of The Border Spin
  7. Buffalo Cauliflower A Buffalo Cauliflower Recipe For The Snack Girl Recipe Swap

I like roasted Nori sheets(which is seaweed)if I'm craving something crunchy & savory. They are pretty nutricious & not bad with the overall stats. You can usually find them in the Asian or International section of most supermarkets.Another good salty, crunchy snack I discovered recently was Kettle Cooked Siracha flavored popcorn.

My grandmother's recipe for making carrots a bit more special - cut the carrots into fingers, steam just a bit, drain, add chili powder and salt to taste, a tiny bit of sugar, and a good squeeze of lemon. They'll keep nicely in the fridge and have a little more flavour than eating carrots raw! (Which I love, but it's nice for variety.)

I'm a Weight Watcher who always appreciates Top 10 lists, especially of low point savory or sweet snacks! In addition to seasoned roasted seaweed (from Costco), my go-to crunch satisfiers include 34 Degrees crispbread, Trader Joe's (TJ) multiseed rice crackers, TJ lite string cheese (not crunchy, but low-point & satisfying nonetheless!),TJ meringues (3 good-sized meringues for 2 pts, very satisfying with a hot cuppa tea or coffee), rice cakes (sweet or savory varieties), crunchy rice rolls (better & less crumbly than rice cakes, from Costco or TJ),freeze dried fruit.

have you ever tried microwaved potato chips? it comes out super well! I bought this a while back:

http://www.amazon.com/Mastrad-A64601-Chips-Maker-Slicer/dp/…

And despite the bad review, I actually had a lot of luck with that. The slicer that came with it is only semi useful (i think I lost mine by now), but since i have my awesome cuisinart, it's no longer a problem! I just need to buy the 2mm slicing disc. 4mm slicer is great for slicing apples to use on the dehydrator or the microwave plate, but the potatos came out too thick (still workable but it's harder because it's thicker).

In any case, the other day i had extra potatos that i didn't know what to do with, so i sliced 'em with my cuisinart, patted dry (forgot to salt and pepper 'em), and then zapped 'em with the microwave. took a while since I only had one plate but i ended up chatting with my housemate so it worked out. I also mushed up a large haas avocado, mixed with some salt, pepper, and chilli powder and ate it with the potato chips i microwaved. :D

it's not exactly the lowest calorie dinner but it was really good! and much better than if i bought a bag of dip chips to eat with my avocado! I think i'm gonna nab the 2 pack plate soon as well as the 2mm plate so i can indulge my chip kick whenever i want to, without buying plastic bags worth of junk!

Hey Lisa,

Yeah it can be really difficult to get away from some of the junk food ay! Especially when junk food is so easy.

I'm also a fan of carrots and hummus, also with celery too. I've also started snacking on oat cakes with either hummus, avocado or red onion chutney :)
