A New WONDERful Slow Cooker: Giveaway

February 11, 2014   525 Comments

Do you like to use a slow cooker? Are you ever afraid it will set your house on fire?

Wonderbag Giveaway

My friend, Meredith, doesn’t like her slow cooker because she says everything in it is overcooked and mushy AND she fears leaving an appliance on when she is away from the house.

I have found that I use my slow cooker mostly on the weekends so I can monitor its progress (and use my fire extinguisher if needed).

After Meredith and I had this very serious chat, another buddy, Viola, e-mailed to tell me that she met the CEO of a company (on a plane) that makes something called the “Wonderbag” and Snack Girl should review it.

I got my hands on one (see above) and found myself in slow cooker heaven. Here it is with my dog, Milo.

Milo confused this Wonderbag with a dog bed (as you can see). Dogs can be quite silly. The Wonderbag is a large bag that is filled with little pellets of insulation to keep your pot hot.

First, you put your ingredients in a cast-iron or other type of heavy pot such as this:

This one is a Staub enameled pot that I won in contest. Don’t think that I actually have $350 for a pot (though that would be great).

You bring your recipe ingredients to a boil and let them simmer for about 15 minutes on your stove. Then you place the pot into the Wonderbag and tighten the strap.

You leave it all day (more than four hours) and your food is cooked through. This photo isn’t with the flaming hot cast iron pot if you are wondering if I put my dog in danger. Would I do that?

I left this beef stew in the Wonderbag for about 7 hours and then I had to heat it for about five minutes on the stove to ensure the stew was hot enough to eat.

Why is this better than a traditional slow cooker (the plug in kind)?

  1. You use less energy.
  2. The food is perfectly cooked and not mushy.
  3. If you buy one, they give another one away to a family in Africa.

The carrots and potatoes retained their shape and the meat was tender. Milo and I are totally in love with our Wonderbag (for different reasons of course).

The recipe below is from my book Snack Girl To The Rescue!. This is the beef stew that I make for my family and it has about ½ the amount of beef than a regular beef stew. I bulked it up with potatoes and carrots and my kids don’t even notice the difference.

When you use less meat, you save money, the environment, and you get the chance to eat more vegetables. Hurray!

I did have to change the recipe by adding a cup of water at the start to use the Wonderbag, but it did not effect the taste of the dish.

You can usually find beef round cut into chunks for stew in the meat section of your supermarket. Add some frozen peas at the end and heat for five minutes in the stew to give a splash of green and even more vegetables.

1 pound (4 medium) red-skinned potatoes, scrubbed and cut into 1 ½-inch chunks

1 pound carrots, peeled and sliced into 1-inch chunks
3 garlic cloves, peeled and smashed

Place the beef in a 6-quart slow cooker. Mix in the vinegar and flour. Pour the diced tomatoes with their juice on top of the beef. Salsa chicken. Just some chicken breasts with a jar of salsa. Shred and serve over rice, quinoa or a salad.

PULLED PORK IN THE CROCKPOT. ALWAYS A WINNER

Pulled BBQ pork

I have a really yummy creamy chicken and wild rice soup recipe that I would love to try with this bag!

Everything, I've never had a problem with anything coming out mushy or overcooked, but I'd still give this idea a try.

My favorite slow cooker recipe is barbecued pulled pork! Yumm

Traditional pot roast with potatoes, carrots and onions.

I can't think of anything I don't love that's been cooked in my crock pot. My only complaint is that I only have one. I treasure my crock pot. What a great invention this Wonderbag. Anything that saves energy and makes my house safer (no spontaneous fires) I am all for.

BBQ shredded beef to eat over baked potatoes...yum!!

Rotisserie-type chicken with carrots and onions.

My favorite slow cooker recipe is Cincinatti Chili. It makes the house smell fabulous, especially on a winter day!

Cuban pork! Marinate overnight in lime juice, orange juice, garlic, cumin & oregano. Pop it in the Crockpot first thing in the morning, and voilà! Delish with brown rice and black beans.

My favorite is chili cooked all day - ingredients depend on my mood- tomato juice, different types of beans- pinto , garbanzo, northern...whatever I feel like putting in, onions, peppers, chipotle peppers, spinach, corn, mushrooms- whatever veggies I have that sound good that day!

Vegetarian chili!

Creamy chicken served over rice. Kid favorite!

I love my crock pot, so much so that I have 2 of them. I don't use it every day, but on a busy day it's a lifesaver as dinner is ready pretty much as soon as we get home. I think the key is to set the temperature according to how long it will be on. I've never had anything overcooked or mushy. My newest one (I have a problem with breaking lids every few years) is programmable (because I was not the one to break the lid and someone felt guilty). So I can set for 4,6,8 or 10 hours and it goes to a warm setting when done. I make casseroles, soups, stews and even tried pasta in it (I loved crock pot lasanga, my family? Not so much). With my older one if I am going to be out and it will need to cook for more than 8-10 hours I plug it into a lamp timer to shut it off at 10 hours and it will just slowly cool.

My favorite recipe - I make asian spare ribs in my crock pot. Mmmmmmmm

This is so cool. I wonder if it would work for yogurt?? Lisa, you mentioned that it needed heating for a minute at the end. Can you speak to the food safety issues of long-term temperature and such? Just checking. Looks quite fetching on the dog, I must say.....

Turkey Breast in the crockpot. It is always perfect and falls off the bone. 2 ingredients...a Turkey breast and onion soup mix.

I actually make my onion soup mix to keep it healthier.

I made the best Hungarian goulash in my slow cooker...a more modern tribute to my Hungarian grandmother...

Love pulled pork or chili
