Healthy Snacks for After School

Your kids are coming home and they will be hungry. What do you have stocked for healthy snacks after school?

Healthy Snacks for After School

I say “stocked” because I’m not the mother who cut up fruit into little shapes so they looked like a smiley face (well, I might have done this on the weekends).

I’m usually the mother who is balancing work and childcare so I empower my 9 and 12 year old to make their own snacks (and to clean up).

A friend of mine’s son came home on the bus for the first time by himself (neither parent could be there for an hour) walked in and made two fried eggs. He was in the fourth grade and his mother was shocked he would even attempt it.

They had to have a little talk about using the stove without supervision but I like his ingenuity. He wanted eggs so he made eggs. What’s not to like? My advice is to walk away from the kitchen and see what happens.

I don’t need to tell you that my kids demand stuff like packaged granola bars and chips. Wouldn’t that be so easy? They would love that. Instead, I attempt to inspire them to make something with fresh food.

Whatever you do – do not buy them the Worst Snack to Eat. You will be tempted but DON’T DO IT!

Sometimes it works and sometimes they sigh heavily, roll their eyes, and starve.

On a few of the recipes below, I use a waffle iron. Kids love using it because it is easier for them to manage than the stove. My kids also love the “waffle” shape. It is kinda like an “Easy Bake Oven” except that it doesn’t use a light bulb ☺.

My kids also love the blender for smoothies. My daughter is always trying to come up with new fruit combinations so I make sure to have some bags of frozen fruit ready for her. I am usually forced to try her concoctions.

I have an almost 9 year old and a 12 year old, and we generally don't cook for snack time. The 12 yo usually comes home and has a banana and possible some hummus and flatbread. She also likes Swiss cheese and crackers. My youngest enjoys plain yogurt with toppings, usually fruit or honey. She also likes Laughing Cow cheese and crackers, in addition to fruit cups. Now, that isn't to say that occasionally they don't opt for a pudding cup or chips and dip if we have some left over from the weekend, but I try to keep those kinds of snacks in a once-in-a-while-that's-fine category.
