Dan Harris, co-anchor of Nightline, found a mindful way to defang the critical voice in his head.
I think all of you know that voice – I call mine the “Birdman” – after the Academy Award Winning movie about an actor trying to make a comeback on Broadway. My Birdman follows me around and says things like,
“Why did you DO that? You are so stupid.”
“Why is she wearing those pants?”
“My child is a monster!!!”
and most often –
“You can’t do anything right.”
This very critical voice gets in the way of your happiness because it is always trying to take you down a couple notches. That voice keeps you out of the moment – either in the past or the future – always worrying.
Dan Harris found that meditation allowed him to free himself from his Birdman (the critical voice in his head) and get some distance – and he became 10% happier (which is setting your expectations kinda low if you ask me).
