DIY Peppermint Mocha Recipe

This DIY peppermint mocha recipe with save you money and calories! (and a trip to Starbucks).

DIY Starbucks Peppermint Mocha

When the leaves are blowing all around and the sky is dark - I NEED coffee. Or to put it more clearly, I WANT a peppermint mocha! hot milk....chocolate.....yum.....

These bad boys come in a cute red Starbucks cup and just instantly make winter disappear for about 10 minutes. Then, you realize you just drank 500 calories and start to feel bad.

Do I have a solution for you?!!

I picked up some peppermint extract and dark chocolate syrup from the supermarket and after about 5 tries - I got made my OWN peppermint mocha latte. I was a bit buzzed from drinking so much coffee but I managed to get to sleep at 3 AM.

I’ve also taught others how to make an iced mocha at home during the summer months as I love coffee a bit too much.

The key here is portion size. I couldn't get it to work unless I made one that was about 1/2 cup in size. You just need too much chocolate if you make a bigger one to get the right ratio of flavors.

Also, you need the teeniest, tiniest drop of peppermint extract. I poured too much in the first time and my peppermint mocha tasted like toothpaste. ARGH! I would even recommend using a medicine dropper if you have one.

I used a milk frother (see below) to get the milk all bubbly. You don't need an espresso maker to make this drink - and you can skip frothing the milk if that is just too fancy for you.

I bought this last year and it is okay. If I want the milk to be really hot, I have to run it a couple of times. I have included another brand of milk frother below if you are interested in getting one. I do find that having one of these has saved me from buying cappuccinos, lattes, and mochas out of the house. I can make my own! (and who has $5 for a coffee?)

How do you get the chocolate sauce in that cute pattern? I think you draw a circle with the sauce and run a fork tong from the center out to make stripes. I don't care how mine looks as long as it tastes really good.

If you are interested in a fast way to have breakfast try my coffee smoothie.

Have you tried to make any of the milky Christmas drinks at home?

Can you share how you made it look so cute? I know I don't *need* it to have cute swirlies, but I'd love to do that! Thanks for the recipe! :)

To FROTH the milk WITHOUT a milk frother, just warm in the the microwave (carefully! I use soy, about 30 sec x2-3 waiting in between), put in a cup with a lid, and SHAKE VIGOROUSLY!!!! it makes a mean capucino ;)

Praise The Eyedropper. A Very Handy Item.

@ Lisa K

To Begin With Have Two Utensils Available One To Deposit (Drizzle) The Item ALSO One For Spreading The Item.

Drizzle The Syrup Upon The Surface Of The Item In A Circular Pattern.

Then With The Second Utensil Begin At The Center Of The Item Then Drag The Syrup To The Outside.

I add a tablespoon of Whole foods Organic Hot Cocoa Mix (about 70 Calories) to my cup of coffee. It does have cane sugar but no artificial sweeteners, additives or other nasty stuff. Now I just need to add a drop of peppermint oil!

I hate the skinny peppermint mochas because of the chocolate syrup tastes nasty. But if you want to use skim milk instead and increase the amount of both liquids, you can get away with getting more for a few more points. Also, light chocolate syrup isn't all too bad either.

Looks like such a yummy recipe, and easy to make! Shared link on my face book biz fan page, hope you don't mind.

I have been making my own peppermint mochas by adding a half a York Peppermint Pattie to my morning brew. I used to use a whole one, but I didn't need it that sweet. I put the lid on the travel mug, give it a couple of good shakes to blend the now-melty Pattie, and add a splash of milk. It's pretty good!

I make one with 1 tbsp. of cocoa powder (Hershey's special dark is my favorite), a cup of coffee, 1/4 cup unsweetened vanilla almond milk, no more than 1/8 tsp peppermint extract, and stevia to taste. Mine comes out to be 0 pts!

OMG - this looks awesome. This is exactly what I tend to crave in the late afternoon. Thank you!

I am having fun looking at all of the ideas for how to make this drink! And hey,now I have 2 reasons to go buy Peppermint Patties:) There's no way I can afford Staryucks and I am lactose-intolerant and allergic to soy, so I'd be outta luck. I love all of these ideas, 'will have to just play around with a few (and my yummy Dark Chocolate Almondmilk!) & see how it goes!

@LisaK- I guess no one answered your question. That is a photo of someone's work who can make art in a cup of coffee (well,a coffee drink with milk). There are a ton of cool YouTube vids about it & there are probably some instructional vids - but it will take practice. So it depends how much you want to do it. Give it a go, i think it would be really fun to have that skill. :)

it's only November but it's unusually cold. It's already 2 blanket weather. It's already dipping into the 60's at night.

Hey Lisa - just joined your site - and loving all of your ideas. On WW since last March (doing pretty well) and always looking for low-point, yummy suggestions - since it's Jan. 2015 and -1 here, your ideas for hot drinks are fantastic! Can't wait to try - and keep those great hints coming!! :)

this sounds amazing with cold weather here it's just the ticket gonna try one today as i always have those ingredients on hand

What a great way to enter the holiday season!!! Thank you, Lisa!

Love all these suggestions. Especially the peppermint patty one. 😁

This looks scrumptious! Must have now. Love the quick way to froth up soy milk, heat n shake. I don't have any peppermint patties (or Junior mints) in the house right now but...candy canes should work too! They add mintiness to cocoa. My leftover canes are indiv.-wrapped and I use them year-round. :)

Sounds great! You can froth milk without a special tool- simply put milk into a glass jar with tight lid, shake it vigorously for about 30 seconds til it is vey foamy, take off lid and microwave on high for 20 or 30 seconds. Low fat milk seems to work better than full fat. Voila- foamed milk for topping whatever.

Oh yum!!! My favorite flavor is peppermint mocha - and now you have made it much more guilt-free. Thank you!!!

sounds great but small i'd have to double the portions LOL!!!!!

can you make this with espresso? I have a really nice expresso machine.

Try a mint teabag or two . . .

I bought a milk frother at Bed, Bath and Beyond several years ago for about $15.00. It was probably cheaper after using their coupon.

Mike H, cold in the 60s?! Bwahahaha, it was around 25 with ice here every morning this week! LOL I am going to visit my parents in Florida in exactly one month from today and I can't wait to hit the beach & the pool. :)

I’ve been making a similar iced coffee for years. I cup double-strength coffee, creamer to taste, drop of peppermint flavoring and a tablespoon of Hershey’s no-sugar chocolate syrup. Put ground instant coffee in cup, add hot water and stir. Add in creamer, flavoring and chocolate syrup. Stir well and refrigerate. Few hours later I add ice to a twenty ounce cup (about halfway) then cold coffee mixture. Squirt of whipped cream on top and viola! I add Splenda as well but that’s personal choice.

I’ve done this in a quart pitcher. Works out well and I have coffee for days.

I also put strong coffee in ice trays and put the cubes in zipper freezer bags. No dilution of flavor and I buy the Dollar Tree coffee so the cost remains low.

I use an insulated tumbler and ice doesn’t melt. Eight hours later my iced coffee is strong and delicious!

I make something like this all the time when I'm craving hot chocolate! (We don't drink coffee.) I heat up 1 cup milk in the microwave then "froth" it in the blender with 1 T cocoa powder (no sugar or weird ingredients and tastes REAL!), a drop of peppermint extract, and 1 T pure maple syrup or honey. I usually warm it up for a bit in the microwave again because I like it really hot. Seriously SO GOOD!!

What if I don't have peppermint extract

Hey! Great recipe! If the coffee is keeping you up, try Maud's (Intelligent Blends) k-cup decaf. You will save some $ and you won't believe it's decaf (especially) their specially-roasted brand! Also been dipping into a little bit of Amaretto w/ my coffee! Wow! Happy holidays and thanks for your website!!!!
