Check Out These New Snack Finds

Someone called Doug sent me these nuts. Guess what he calls them? Doug's Nuts!

Healthy Packaged Snacks March12

You can't make this stuff up.

I gotta tell you, if Doug wants to send me his nuts, I will say YES! every time. These are SO delicious. Doug lives in Eugene, Oregon and has been working on his nut recipe for a while.

From Doug's Nuts:

The intrepid food alchemist toiled and struggled in the sweltering kitchen, searching for that elusive quintessential combination of salt, sweet and savory flavor until finally, limp and nearly spent, he pulled one last batch from the roasting oven and set it aside to cool.

Then he decided that they didn't "suck". My experience was that I couldn't stop eating them. I would treat these as a nutritious TREAT - he added a wee bit of sugar and salt to these nuts and so you are getting a few extra calories - but these are worth it.

You can buy Doug's Nuts on his website here: Doug's Nuts Store where a 6 pack of his fabulous nuts can be purchased for $30 (free shipping).

For one ounce = 160 calories, 14 g fat, 7 g carbohydrates, 5 g protein, 3.5 g fiber, 85 mg sodium, 5 Points+

milkbite

Now I am going to feature one of the biggest snack food companies in America - Doug's Nuts is going to wonder what it is doing on the same page as KRAFT - but, hey, this is my website so I can do crazy stuff.

Kraft sent me the MilkBite's photographed above to try - and I like them. They are found in the dairy aisle or a refrigerated case because they contain (wait for it) MILK. They are near the pudding right now in your local grocery store. My children went crazy for these.

What do I like about them? Well, first I liked how they tasted. They had a nice sweet, oatmeal cookie, fresh taste. The first ingredient is whole grain - and they are only 140 calories each - which is a good calorie size for a snack.

Here is the ingredient list for the chocolate flavor (no artificial colors or flavors):
Rolled oats, sugar, cream (from milk), skim milk, inulin, soy protein crisp, chocolate, canola oil, calcium phosphate, brown rice syrup, oat flour, molasses, cocoa butter, palm kernal oil, honey, salt, cocoa powder, soy lecithin, natural flavor, palm oil, vitamin D3

Here are the nutrition facts:
For one bar = 140 calories, 6 g fat, 18 g carbohydrates, 10 g sugar, 5 g protein, 3 g fiber, 75 mg sodium, 4 Points+

As far as a packaged granola bar goes, these are pretty good. Yes, they have 2 teaspoons of sugar in them (argh), but they also have protein, fiber, etc. I think I would treat these as a treat for my kids. You can freeze them and put them in their lunchbox and they will stay fresh.

They retail for $3.49 per package.

Looking for sweet tea without any sugar or artificial sweetener added? Look no further than Sokenbicha from Japan. It has zero calories and it still tastes sweet.

Actually, Sokenbicha is a Coca-Cola product sold in Japan and now it is here. So, I guess it starts out in Atlanta, visits Japan, and then flies back :)

Here are their different flavors:

Revive – Crisp Oolong Tea blend with natural botanicals. Ingredients include: Oolong Tea Leaves, Black Tea Leaves, Rose Petals, Rose Hips, Ginseng.
Defend – Mild Oolong Tea blend with natural botanicals. Ingredients include: Oolong Tea Leaves, Black Tea Leaves, Guava Leaves, Ginseng.
Purify – Aromatic Green Tea blend with natural botanicals. Ingredients include: Green Tea Leaves, Oolong Tea Leaves, Black Tea Leaves, Chamomile, Aloe.
Shape – Bold Barley Tea blend with natural botanicals. Ingredients include: Roasted Pearl Barley, Roasted Rice, Pu’er Tea Leaves, Green Tea Leaves, Roasted Brown Rice, Young Barley Leaves.
Skin – Full-bodied Barley Tea blend with natural botanicals. Ingredients include: Roasted Pearl Barley, Roasted Rice, Pu’er Tea Leaves, Green Tea Leaves, Roasted Brown Rice, Young Barley Leaves, Cinnamon, Ginger.

I liked it because it uses the herbs to make it sweet and it has a subtle flavor. It retails for $1.99 for one bottle and can be found here: Sokenbicha Retailers.

I love your reviews, but I guess I'll stick to homemade granola bars, little healthier for you! :)

Well as far as the Kraft Milk Bite Granola Bars, you can bet 100% the Canola & Soy are GM.

The milkbite is far from perfect - I just thought it was a better option than some of the other packaged granola bars out there. And, it tasted better - just remember that it is a cookie.

So..hate to ask... but how big are Doug's Nuts? (There isn't a label for how many servings you get in a 5$ bag)

I thought Doug would have the info under Additional Information but he does not. I can't see myself paying $5 for a 1oz serving if that's what it is.

The website indicates each bag is 4 oz. which makes them $20 a pound. Not affordable in my book. In addition, this would make each bag 20 points.

Snak girl, I was starting to have faith in you but it appears the big food companies are weaseling their way into your otherwise excellent mind set. 140 calories are still too much when you consider the small size of each bar and all the preservatives...just sayin

The nuts look delicious; however, the four pack = one pound. $30 for a pound of nuts is really steep. Just a thought. :0)

Everyone: Remember this does include the shipping cost.

Those "Milk" bars are full of additives and artificial preservatives. They're playing to your healthy side by saying it contains no artifical colors or flavors. They're tricking people into thinking it's healthy. And those strange ingredients are going to do far more harm to your health than a little fat would.

Sadly, even Doug's Nuts aren't a good option. They are made with "Natural Flavors", which most often means MSG.

Snack Girl, thank you so much for talking about the milk bite's. I am very busy and don't have time to make everything my kids eat. Therefore, I have to have some snacks that are easy to grab and go. I won't give these to my kids every day, but it's nice to know that these aren't a terrible option. I love your approach on food!!!

Processed foods on Snack Girl?????? What happened????

@Violtettfem - there is processed food here - there always has been - I reviewed Wheat Thins on Tuesday. I'm trying to look for the best processed food on the market. The Milkbites are a treat - and I thought had some good qualities.

Snack Girl, keep up the good work!

Jennifer, are you willing to share your recipe for homemade granola bars?

Yes, keep up the reviews of the processed foods along with all your great recipes and other reviews. You have a great balance of fresh food and processed and everywhere in between. I love to know what's the best of the quick things out there when I'm in a pinch. I buy them for myself and my kids when I need to and want to know what's up and what's new. Thank you!

Yes I agree--your reviews are AMAZING, and I appreciate that you include the 'best of the processed food' for those of us who need a bit of convenience every once in a while ;-) I don't think it's (mentally) healthy to NEVER allow for special treats every now and then.

I appreciate what snack girl is trying to do here. I make almost everything from scratch but I love cooking and I'm a stay-at-home-mom for most of the year so I have the time during the day. When I can't make something from scratch or I'm traveling and need to grab something, though, it's nice that there's a site like this one that gives honest reviews. A store bought granola bar will never be as good as a homemade one but, if the store bought is the only option, there are certainly some that are better than others.

That being said, if you want to make your own granola bars, here is a super easy and healthy version :)

I'm surprised so many people are flaming you for putting processed food by big name companies on here. 1) It's YOUR blog, you can do what you want with it. 2) Like you said, there's always been some processed foods reviewed on here. 3) Everything is usually fine in moderation. Snack Girl even said the Milkbites were fine as a special treat - not all the time. Like another comment said, what I love about your blog is the combination of some processed and some homemade/fresh foods. Not everyone has loads of time (or money!) to make everything homemade! Your blog balances it out pretty well, which is good for average people.
