Mason Jar Yogurt Parfait

July 15, 2013   23 Comments

Do you know those containers of fruit flavored yogurts? You know the ones I am referring to - Yoplait, Chobani, Dannon. etc.

Mason Jar Parfait

How about never eating one of those again?

I am going to talk you out of it walking down the dairy aisle by showing you how to make an alternative that tastes SO MUCH BETTER.

You know all that awesome fresh summer fruit? Peaches, strawberries, blueberries, nectarines, and peaches :) All you have to do is layer it in a container, such as a Mason jar, with some plain yogurt and you have a tasty breakfast or snack.

I make three of these at a time and keep them in the fridge for when I am hungry. These are cold, sweet, and completely green. Take that plastic yogurt container!

I used plain yogurt here because I like it. But, you can use Greek yogurt, soy yogurt, or whatever yogurt you have around. If you are trying to avoid added sugar (and I always am), do not use vanilla yogurt.

If this isn’t sweet enough for you (it will depend on the fruit that you use), add some honey, maple syrup, or sugar. You will be doing much better than most of the yogurts in the dairy section.

Looks so delicious! Yogurt is always my favorite. Thanks for the recipe!

I make my own pretty much the same but the points are higher. I usually get 5to6 pts with the granola. Can you tell which brands your using?

So simple and such a good idea. Why haven't I thought of doing this?

I mix a little strawberry Simply Fruit jam into the yogurt to sweeten it, then add fruit.

I make the parfaits using homemade plain Greek yogurt. I did encounter a problem when I made a few up at one time. The yogurt culture fed on the sugar and fermented. So Niw I make them up as needed.

I've recently made the switch from the already fruited (fruit bottom) yogourt to just plain and then adding my own fresh fruit and/or homemade granola.I now buy a big container of yogurt and just mix up whatever variation I want! If I'm taking it to work for a daytime snack, I pack it up in a reusable container. makes so much good, healthy and environmentally friendly sense!

I make these layered with precooked oatmeal instead of granola! Healthier option than granola but I have been know to sprinkle a little granola on top instead to garnish. These make a great portable breakfast ready to go in the morning!

This is so cute! for those that want something more like the flavored yogurts (I came up with this for desert one day!):

Microwave a few berries, OR 1 strawberry, or any small amount of FROZEN fruit for about15 seconds, with a few dropsof water.

Mash it up so nits slightly chuncky

add 3 oz greek yogurt & splash of soy milk & ENJOY! so good :))

what size mason jars do you use? I want to get a case of them for the refrigerator oats and for these and last time I got the wrong size jar.

To my plain 0% greek yogurt, I add a few drops of BetterStevia™ Liquid Extract in French Vanilla and stir it up. (I found it at my health food store.) Sooo good by itself or with fruit. Then I usually add a handful of whatever frozen or fresh fruit i have on hand. The fruit gets plopped on top and it goes to work with me then i stir it up before i eat it. Such a great snack or breakfast on the go!

@Jean - I use the pint size jars which are 2 cups. These are perfect because you need some room to spoon out the yogurt. Thanks for your question!

To be 'green,' why not make use of glass jars we already have in our kitchen? I save empty peanut butter jars, salsa jars, anything that is glass. The only glitch is sometimes the rim of the lid can hold a scent if it was originally used for a strong smelling product. I find glass peanut butter jars wonderfully handy. If I only want to use a portion of, say, a red onion, I peel the whole thing, use what I want and store the rest in the jar. No smell at all wafting in the fridge, and it's good for a week or more I have an assortment of glass jars -- always handy.

@marlene- my family does that, with those chinese soup containers!

a great way to flavor plain yogurt is add real vanilla and cinnamon - stir well - then you can add fruit and granola ... doesn't make it sweet but the flavor is great

I do the same as Sandy or add put yogurt in a reusable container and add frozen berries and chia seeds, by the time I go to eat it as a afternoon snack it's defrosted.

What do you think of Dannon Light & Fit Greek Yogurt? I love it and it is only 2 WW points for each one. But now I am second-guessing myself since reading this. It is expensive and maybe not Greek yogurt at all. It has the artificial sugar, which I know some people are against, but I am fine with it. I better go and check it out now and think about doing it your way.

I like a half serving of crystal light stirred into Fage 0% fat greek yogurt with a complimentary serving of fresh fruit. I first heard that in a weight watchers meeting and then saw it later in a hungry girl email. I like the "margarita" flavor a lot... :-)

Fresh fruit is great....but for breakfast I have 1/2 jar of baby food fruit (2oz) to 1 cup plain organic yogurt and add 1 envelope of Sweet Leaf stevia with a sprinkle of sliced almonds...stirred together. I alternate different kinds of fruit to keep interesting...peaches are my favorite.Using the baby food allows the fruit to combine with all of the yogurt.

I do this too but am vegan so use plain almond milk yogurt as it has less sugar than soy yogurt. If the fruit isn't particularly sweet I add sun warrior vanilla protein powder for added flavor. And chopped nuts at time of eating. Mmm

What a fantastic idea....saves SO much time trying to decide which yogurt is the best for you...why didn't I think of it? thanks so much...what type of granola do you use?

I use mason jars for yogurt and fruit with chia seeds, layered salads, marinated veggies, and overnight oats. My best tip is to look for the white plastic lids that are reusable for your jars. I take them to work and find them to be much easier than the two part screw on lids. They come in a box of 8 or 10 (I forget which). It's a great way to use my jars.

I know I'm late to the party - just going through some unread emails. This is my lunch almost every day - homemade yogurt and fruit. Fresh fruit when it is in season or frozen fruit when it isn't. Yum.

In the summer I pack in my lunch a container of plain greek yogurt (wegmans brand is cheaper than chobani) along with a container of frozen fruit. By snack time at work a few hours after lunch the fruit is partially thawed and I mix the yogurt fruit and then the juice that defrosts from the fruit for a refreshing afternoon snack. If I want this in the morning for breakfast, I spoon plain greek yogurt in a Togo cup and throw in berries grapes pineapple or whatever fresh fruit I have, some oatmeal and cinnamon (sometimes a blend of cinnamon sugar) for an on the go morning meal.
