Do you know how children bug you for junk food? Well, I brought home a "Lunchables" for review on this site and my kids went bonkers.

My daughter, who is very persistent, begged me to buy another one because a girl in her class brings Lunchables to school. I happen to know the family that sends the Lunchable - two hard working parents - and I am not judging them at all.

BUT, I did write about avoiding "Lunchables" and since I am against them - I had to get creative to stop my children from badgering me.

I came up with the "DIY Pizza Lunchable" above and they think I am a genius - mother of the year! What I like about it is that it is super easy to make and I get to feel like Martha Stewart for a millisecond.

You need little containers (these are Glad - BPA free), pizza sauce with no added sugar, grated mozzarella cheese, and a circle of bread.

The bread is the hardest part of this lunch because you want something like a flat bread. I bought these 100% Whole Wheat Arnold Sandwich Thins - but the ingredient list is a mile long and it includes stevia.

I couldn't find any other bread at Stop & Shop that would work - so I am looking for suggestions. Perfection is overrated anyway :)

All of the food cost me about $9 for 8 DIY Lunchables - which is significantly less than the price of an Oscar Mayer Lunchables ($24) - and I get to reuse the packaging. I did add a piece of fresh fruit so that brings the price up a bit.

If you are at home, just toss this combo in your toaster oven or under your broiler for a delicious pizza snack.

DIY Pizza Lunchable

(makes 8 lunches)
1 package 100% Whole Wheat Arnold Sandwich Thins
1 jar pizza sauce (no sugar added)
1 - 8 ounce package shredded mozzarella cheese

Put cheese and pizza sauce in small containers. Pack lunch box with bread, cheese, sauce, spoon, and napkin. Wait for your children's undying love and gratefulness when they return from school. (Don't forget to pack a piece of fruit.)

One serving with one ounce of cheese = 203 calories, 6.9 g fat, 25.6 g carbohydrates, 12.9 g protein, 6.5 g fiber, 491 mg sodium, 5 Points+

Regarding the bread, whole wheat pita bread is good. Usually five ingredients or less. Whole Foods and Trader Joe's have store brands. Kroger, Publix, and Walmart have Tofouyan brand.

I like to make homemade tortillas and freeze them. They are super easy to make. Just google a basic recipe. Freeze on acookie sheet first (like pancakes) then put frozen ones in storage container.

I agree with Stacy about the tortillas.

It is also just as easy to make your own pizza crusts. Just one batch will make a ton of crusts if you are making them small. Freeze and pull one out when you're ready. This is how I make individual pizzas, without going through the hassle of making the crusts every single time.

My question..I think the "cool" factor for my kid is the packaging...How do I package it "cool"..maybe I buy 1 lunchable and keep the tray? Also any ideas on DIY Yogurt tubes? What can I use for the tubes?

My kids love to make these on an English muffin. This is one of our favorite lunches!

I suggest the bagel "THINS" they are 3 points for a whole bagel and are wonderful !

I LOVE these sandwich thins!! It's all we use at home now, they toast up well, you can make grilled cheese with them...everything! I use Earth Grains, which has a much shorter list than most of the other brands (including Arnolds) including no Sucralose.

I think this is a great idea! I am going to use cookie cutters with my bread, just to make it a little more fun for the kids.

Wait, kids will eat this COLD????

@Gladys - yes, it shocked me as well - but my kids likes this cold. Have you seen the packaged lunchables in the deli case? They have pizza ones just like this. Crazy!

I use whole wheat english muffins. Sometimes whole wheat mini bagels.

I use the mini bagels to make DIY pizza bagels to replace those frozen pizza bagels snack things.

They sell reusable compartmentalized containers that make it look much more like the "real thing"....

Also, you can take bread and a biscuit cutter to cut out the circles, then roll it with a rolling pin to get a flat but not-as-chewy-as-a-tortilla "crust." I throw the crusts into a baggie in the freezer for whenever I need breadcrumbs, so there's no waste.

** the crusts I throw in the freezer are the scraps after cutting the circles, of course -- I don't think I was clear :)

If you want to keep with a cracker theme like lunchables. You could also use Ak-mak whole wheat crackers..they are great and only 5 ingredients,

Trader Joe's has them the cheapest but they can be found in any supermarket.

@Gail: I got some silicone (BPA free) smoothie type holders from Amazon that I send frozen yogurt type smoothies in my son's lunch with. They start out frozen, but by lunch, they are a smoothie consistency. They are washable, reusable, come in multiple colors - & they have caps so nothing leaks. (well, hardly ever!) You might try that over they "Gogurt" brand of lengthy ingredients. I take plain greek yogurt, throw in some fruit or juice, blend it & pour into the holders & freeze. He loves them!

I have done something similar using the Flat-Out Foldable flatbreads. I cut itbin half and end up with 2 oval shaped breads.

Great idea, I never thought about it and I actually buy those cheese pizza ones for my daughter as she loves them, but yes they are way too expensive.

This may be a silly question, but isn't Stevia good for you? I thought that it was a healthy alternative to sugar?

My ds bugs me for lunchables too. I've done the pizza ones with thins and I add turkey pepperoni. I also make cracker lunchables (although I admit that I use whatever cracker is available, not the healthiest) with swiss cheese and turkey pepperoni. I always add fruit and if they're really lucky, I'll throw in a little sweet treat. Both my kids love "mommy" lunchables.

I know this is a bit late, but I came across this post and just had to comment. My mom used to send homemade lunchable type meals with me all the time when I was younger. I loved the turkey ones, so she would cook up some turkey and cut it into circles, chop up some low fat cheese, and include some triscuits or other crackers. It was my favorite lunch and I would beg her to make it for me everyday. She also included some kind of fruit or veggie and a fun size chocolate to make it more like the real thing. It was awesome.

Awesome idea. How about unrolling a tube of crescent rolls. Pinch the pre-cut seams together.

Cut into little squares, bake and store. These would be light and airy and QUICK to boot.

Great idea and for those children that have a gluten intolerance (celiac disease) I use white cheddar rice cakes!!!

I use the sandwich rounds (thins) with Chef Boy Ardee sauce (as that CBA mixes were my favorite growing up) with a little mozzerella and a little grated parmesan, OR Weight Watchers blend OR mixture of WW cheddar & WW mozzerella. If you want to go vegan, Daiya vegan cheese is very melty. It's a little pricey, but I actually like it on the little pizzas better than real cheese!
