Cantaloupe For An Easy Healthy Breakfast

August 20, 2012   23 Comments

I want to know which creative thinker came up with a "bread" bowl. That person was ON to something. Of course, most of us need to avoid bread bowls (especially if they are filled with a clam chowder).

Cantaloupe for Breakfast

Snack Girl has come up with her own BOWL concept. A cantaloupe bowl! For a mere 100 calories (or less depending on the size of your bowl), you have a great way to get your fill of fruit to start your day.

I added 1/2 cup of low-fat yogurt and some blueberries. On average, you will have 200 calories, 25% of your daily value of Calcium, 192% of your DV of Vitamin C, and 9 grams of protein.

AND, you have fewer dishes to wash.

(The plate in this photo was used for photographic purposes. No dish was dirtied eating this breakfast - just a spoon :)

Don't tell me you don't have time to make this. It is almost as fast as a bowl of cold cereal.

You can also add some granola (for crunch) and any other fruit to the top. The idea is to add more protein to the cantaloupe withe the yogurt so that you don't get hungry later in the day.

It also takes a WHILE to eat it. This is not a grab and go breakfast - and that is a GOOD thing. Savor the lovely flavor of fresh cantaloupe.

If you don’t like cantaloupe, you can use honeydew melon. Other great stuff to put in your melon bowl:

  • cottage cheese with cinnamon or pepper
  • chicken salad
  • feta cheese and lime juice

Have you tried a cantaloupe bowl?

This is such a great idea! I'm having a total "duh!" moment here. Thanks for the tip.

Theres only 100 cals in a half of a cantaloupe? thats something I find amazing

This is brilliant!!!! Thank you!

Love the cantaloupe bowl!! I have done this myself!! I have a cantaloupe on the counter, think I'll make this for tomorrows breakfast!!

Such a great idea. I can't wait to try it. I'll be sharing your idea with my clients for sure.

I have had a cantaloupe bowl as a little girl. My dad would fill it with vanilla ice cream! This is so much better for the health/weight conscience! Thanks!

raspberries also go good with cantaloupe. Sweet and tart.

I've used low fat cottage cheese with peaches, or strawberries. I've also used a large tomato, cored and sliced in 4 pieces and stuffed it with tuna or chicken salad made with celery, chopped onions and low fat mayo. This is a great lunch as well and you can eat the entire thing (although you may have to wash the dish and knife and fork).

Can you tell my how to pick out a "good" cantaloupe? Thanks.

I love it and I share it all over the place. Have a great day.

I used to be obsessed with eating a 1/2 papaya topped with yogurt and granola. But, living in Chicago, the chances of finding a good papaya are slim to none. So using a cantaloupe is a great idea! Thanks for the tip!

I love low fat vanilla yogurt or cottage cheese in a cantaloupe bowl. I'm glad to see others are doing it. I have an old timey long handled teaspoon that I use especially for this. The edge of the spoon is thin so it cuts right into the cantaloupe and holds a delicious mouthful of the melon and yogurt. Yum!

Wonderful idea! I love cantaloupe this time of year. However, here in southwest Indiana, we've had an outbreak of salmonella from our locally grown cantloupe--a special kind called Posey Co. melons. They really are the best kind of cantaloupe. So, if you purchase from a farmer's market or stand, be sure to wash the outside very well with soap and water!

I love this idea!!!!

I love melons!!! I second the idea in Teresa Ahrenholtz's comment on 8/20/12--- wash the outside with a scrub brush before cutting open, cuz even tho not eating outside, the germs can transfer from your knife to the inside portion of the melon.

Fantastic idea! I can not wait to try this!!

Love it! I like to fill mine with banana slices, walnuts and a little drizzle of agave nectar. :o)

What about the sugar intake with fruit, or are you just watching calories?

@Jenny, the way I pick a good cantaloupe is to smell it: if it smells sweet and smells like a cantaloupe, it's probably a good one. Another thing I do is to buy my melons from a local organic farm that sells at the farmers' market; I always know I'll get a good melon from their stand.

Beautiful! I love it!

i just made this -- INCREDIBLY tasty and satisfying! Can be a desert too! I used 0% plain fage greek yogurt and it came out so amazing I didn't event want to add any agave nectar to it lol

Just yesterday, I toghhut that maybe I would try a peach-feta salad... And now here's a melon, mint and feta salad! I think peaches would be a delicious addition, too. Thanks for the perfect timing!

What an excellent food blog, I'm been excpltionaley tight financially these past few months and found you via a comment at food blog scool. This salad looks delicious. Cheers!
