Like this guy, I spend a lot of time looking at packages in the supermarket.

Pantry List

I have been asked many times what I keep in my house, and I am finally going to tell you. Why would this be helpful? Having your house stocked with some basics will help you stay on the healthy road.

Once I went over to a friend’s house who was a strict vegetarian and, for a reason I cannot remember, I opened his fridge. There was a whole bunch of stuff I had never seen before, miso paste, almond milk, soy cheese, etc. and I realized that he stocked his house entirely differently than me.

Perhaps this list will get you thinking about what you purchase and give you some new ideas for food to keep around in case of a snow storm.

These items are what you will find in my house every day. I buy a whole bunch of different produced based on the season, but I almost always have the food below.

It is a little terrifying to share this list, because everyone has a different opinion about what is healthy. I will tell you that the choices that I make are based on my entire family’s needs (not just mine).

I buy almost everything from my local Stop & Shop. With this food in the house, I can cook up a bunch of different meals for example, quesadillas, split pea soup, chili, roast chicken, and chicken soup.

I had to laugh out loud at how similar our pantries are! Right down to the Van's and sausages, both of which my 3yo loves :) I'd add Polaner All-Fruit Preserves to the fridge section, (oh wait, just saw you have jam listed), and a handful of non- wheat flours for fun baking experiments - Bob's Red Mill's coconut and almond flours are current faves. (Great, filling pancakes, muffins and quick breads.) thanks for the list, I am starting my day feeling virtuous!

In my cupboard a variety of dried fruits (used in making my home made granola) Oatmeal- old fashioned and steel cut and in the fridge or freezer raw unsalted walnuts, pecans and almonds (for snacking or granola making). Love your list!

@Sandee - I also have nuts and raisins. I forgot to put them on the list!! All day long, I believe I will be changing my list to reflect stuff I forgot. My kids had a snow day yesterday and I was a bit frantic. I am fixing it now.

Very similar to our pantry, except add avocados and home made yogurt in my fridge, and nut or Ancient Grains crackers in the cabinet, almond butter and pistachios.

You forgot Tofu, avocados, bananas, juice, and tea! Oh and spices - I have a whole cabinet full of them :)

I recently have started to stock unsweetened almond milk. I was a soy choc girl until the switch. I have found I can make yummy hot choc and smoothies and cut alot of cal's this way!

Wow, that's my pantry right down to the tuna in OO. I do have half sour pickles and yogurt. There is only the two of us so I don't know why I have so much stuff in my kitchen, but I can cook almost anything on a whim because of it. Love my rice cooker for steel cut oatmeal and wheat berries. Love my bullet for smoothies and of course my Kuerig coffee maker.

Spinach! I sometimes use it 3 times per my eggs for breakfast, on my sandwich for lunch and with my dinner either as a salad or cooked as a side dish. Yummy. :)

Thanks for sharing your list! I've got a bunch of the stuff you've got, plus I always have on hand: Bite-sized (unfrosted) shredded wheat, maple syrup, frozen bananas, Kodiak Cakes Flapjack and Waffle Mix, FF milk and yogurt (plain Fage), and PB2 (plain and with chocolate).

I try to have these on hand : chicken and beef broths (low sodium),assort. veges for soups and stews to make from scratch. Pistachios,and cashews. Whole grain breads,peanut butter. Low salt crackers,oatmeal,apples,bannans green tea,hot cocoa and animal crackers. My son likes those.

While I have a lot of the same stuff you have, during this past blizzard that rocked the east coast and kept us in for a couple of days the priorities were in. For me, it was yogurt, craisins, bagels, natural peanut butter and jam. For my daughter it was haagan daz and fudge striped cookes and for my husband it was smoked salmon and tuscan bread, granola and milk.

Wow! that's a great list, very similar to mine. My other ''must-haves'' include:

REFRIGERATOR-half and half, sauerkraut, parsley, fresh herbs, lemons, 1 lime, couple avocados, sprouts [in lieu of lettuce], radishes, english cuke, sweet potatoes, greens, couple apples, corn meal.

FREEZER-Applegate organic uncured hotdogs, variety of nuts[walnuts, almonds, pecans, cashews,pumpkin seeds] sliced chiabatta bread, blocks of cheddar, fresh ginger, english muffins, raw cookie/scone dough, baked portions of cornbread-usually, about one doz. pints of homemade soups, marinara, bag of cooked meatballs, turkey burgers, shrimp, Trader Joe brown rice[for emergencies], homemade seasoned breadcrumbs.

PANTRY-assorted teas and coffee beans, groats, barley, canned cannellini beans, baked beans, sardines, salmon, tuna, boxed tom soup, pumpkin, applesauce, panko, molasses, stevia drops, cinnamon/ sugar shaker, bag of corn flakes, ak-mak, mary's gone crackers, graham crackers, dried lentils, split peas, quinoa, wild rice, navy beans. pastina, clam juice, boxed chardonnay, jug of chianti, sherry, marsala, bourbon, [some liquor for cooking too!:) ] olive oil, sesame oil, lots of vinegars, pkgs of gravy mix, dried cranberries, raisins, dates--PLUS everything you mentioned! It sounds like alot when you list it all. AND I LIVE ALONE, so now I feel like a big fat [but healthy] pig !

Coconut oil is a must-have for me. Some other favorites I keep include raw milk, kombucha (homemade), and lots of spices.

Mine is very similar but I also always have white corn tortillas (never flour tortillas!!), Greek chobanni zero yogurt, slivered almonds that I crunch up into oatmeal or salads, costcos coaches oatmeal (sooo good!!), Sarah lee 45 cal honey wheat bread, Thomas honey wheat high fiber English muffins, turkey sausage and nutra grain waffles and no sugar syrup, Swiss miss 25 cal cocoa mix ( add to oatmeal), zero cal flavored sparkling waters, fat free feta cheese, fiber one bars, fiber one cereal to stir into Greek yogurt. Other then that we have almost identical kitchens! It makes all the difference to have the right stuff on hand. Love your web site and newsletter!!

I'm glad you did this list today as I have to go to the grocery store. My pantry isn't quite as virtuous as yours (I have cake/brownie mixes and Dove Promises) but I'm starting to stock up on better things. This post is also reminding me to clean out my fridge of all the stuff I don't eat so I can fill it with new foods. My go-to veggies are broccoli and green beans in the fridge. I also have pre-formed (by me) 93/7 hamburger patties in the freezer along with homemade frozen meatballs. And then there are the millions of frozen bananas I store in my freezer for a smoothie emergency. In the pantry is also alot of applesauce. I get the unsweetened kind in both the little cups and the squeezy packets. And of course there are Goldfish crackers - can't live without those, well, my daughter can't.

I love hearing everyone's ideas. Must see what can be made with coconut flour now! Also, frozen bananas? Great idea for when I run out of fresh or banana babies (dark chocolate variety, of course)

Love your list but also must have bananas, plain organic protein powder, cocoa powder and unsweetened coconut (for healthy truffles), green tea and Mary's Gone Crackers in pantry. In fridge, coconut milk, sauerkraut with Applegate Farms beef hot dogs, fresh ground almond butter and fresh berries. Thanks for all the great ideas! Love your website :)

I feel like I just past a test. I have many of the things on your list. I don't eat beef or hummus so they are absent but I did pretty good. I am a true fan of the whole wheat pasta's.

I have a dairy senstivity so instead of milk based condiments I have guacamole, humus and olive salad.
