Chobani Simply 100: Friend or Foe?

May 2, 2016   29 Comments

Chobani is the yogurt we all should love. Look at that packaging!

Chobani 100 Review

I had the pleasure of meeting the marketing team and seeing a Chobani yogurt plant in upstate New York. It is an incredible operation that gave me new respect for what it is to be a food company – especially one that works with a perishable product.

Since that meeting, I haven’t heard from Chobani much because I wasn’t very nice. They asked me what they could change to make their product more healthy and I told them to cut the sugar (rather vehemently). I’ve been on a couple of trips to big food companies and every time I end up being very hard on them.

I should love Chobani 100 because this product does what I asked of Chobani. It only has 7 grams of sugar – which is perfect for yogurt. These are the nutritional facts for the strawberry yogurt flavor:

100 calories, 0.0 g fat, 0.0 g saturated fat, 15.0 g carbohydrates, 7.0 g sugar, 12 g protein, 5.0 g fiber, 65 mg sodium, 3 SmartPts

And, unlike Oikos Triple Zero, there is fruit in the ingredients. They are using stevia leaf extract and monkfruit extract to ensure that the yogurt is sweet enough without the extra 5 grams of sugar they usually add to their regular products.

Ingredients for Banana Strawberry Chobani 100:

Nonfat Yogurt (Cultured Pasteurized Nonfat Milk, Live and Active Cultures: S. Thermophilus, L. Bulgaricus, L. Acidophilus, Bifidus and L. Casei), Chicory Root Fiber, Strawberries, Water, Banana Puree, Evaporated Cane Juice, Natural Flavors, Pectin, Locust Bean Gum, Monkfruit Extract, Fruit And Vegetable Juice concentrate (For Color), Stevia Leaf Extract, Lemon Juice Concentrate. Contains Milk.

There it is again! Chicory root fiber (also known as inulin). When I wrote about chicory root fiber a couple of weeks ago, I was surprised by this comment from Robin:

Thank you SO much for this information. I have been eating Dannon’s Oikos now for a couple of weeks and couldn't figure out WHY was a so gassy and bloated.....I am now going to stop eating that brand and see it that is the cause. THANK YOU SO MUCH.....

Because inulin is a natural ingredient, I believe there is no warning on products that contain it. Maybe there should be because many people have a not very fun issue with it. It is a little sad that we need to be so aware of every new ingredient that is added to our food. This type of thing motivates me to stick to the “less than five ingredients” rule about processed food.

My take on Chobani 100 is that it is almost entirely the same as Dannon’s Oikos Triple Zero except for taste. I found the fruit Chobani flavors to taste like soap. There was a floral thing going on that reminded me of sucking on a Dove soap bar. Also, I tasted that bitter kick from the stevia that I hate.

Chobani 100 tasted medicinal to me and after trying 4 flavors, I tossed it all out.

Food, even when you are trying to cut back, should be pleasurable. You should grab your container off the shelf and be excited about having your snack. It shouldn’t be a form of punishment because you gained 10 pounds last year.

My advice (broken record here) is to buy plain yogurt and mix in fresh fruit or a little of your favorite jam. This will taste infinitely better than Chobani 100.

Is Inulin Good or Bad?

Should You Be Concerned about Inulin or Chicory Root Fiber?

I noticed when I started looking at lower calorie Greek yogurt that inulin (also known as chicory root fiber) is popping up everywhere....

Please try the new Chobani Simply 100 Chocolate Strawberry Flip...love to hear what you think of it. Chobani 100 is one of the only lines of yogurt that does not bother my stomach.

I just can't understand why anyone one needs to sweeten yogurt. Add some fruit a few bits of granola if you like it and away you go! Perfect little snack.

Plain greek yogurt with pureed mango is delicious. The mango puree is also tasty on cottage cheese.

@Laurel - I will take a look at the new Chobani 100 flip. Thanks!

Plain Greek yogurt with any fruit is better than all the ingredients they put in products now- and some people have no idea why they have stomach issues after eating this stuff- and they keep eating it,

Thank you for alerting people, Lisa!

I love Snack Girl!!

I always appreciate your reviews. I will steer clear of this one. You are so right, plain yogurt with fruit is much better.

I eat Chobani Simply 100 Vanilla, I dd my owqn frozen fruit, blending it together. I find this pretty good. Being diabetic I do watch what I eat. I divide this mixture in half so I am only eating @50 calories at a time (once in AM once in PM). Enjoy your emails and recipes. Thanks

Yes I noticed the same thing, but I like them, so I don't care. I have never had a stomach issue when I eat them.

Thanks Snack Girl for looking into this and all the latest changes in food - I wouldn't know where to begin! I live in the UK so we don't always have the same brands, but I still find the knowledge about ingredients useful. Thanks this time for the comment about Stevia, I've been wondering about it but I pick up on aftertastes and I know that would be a deal-breaker for me. Keep doing the good work :)

I love the prebiotic fiber-chicory root fiber!

I know it is working and creating free fatty acids for good health. If you get gas and bloating, it is your body telling you that your not eating enough fiber. Eat a high fiber diet and you can tolerate Simply 100 and Triple Zero

Perhaps the problem comes from trying to whittle a healthy product down to 100 calories? I'm eating Zoi plain full-fat yogurt as we read this. I ran to check the ingredient list: no inulin. I added muelsli, walnuts and raisins, which probably brings the calorie total to 350ish, but it's my breakfast, so that's fine.

Thank you for this fabulous post! Just shared it with my WW leader. I stopped eating Chobani a loooong time ago, back before this Chobani 100 came out. I used to eat the other types of Chobani and hadn't bothered to look at the sky high sugar count. Once I found out, I kicked them to the curb!

I love the Chobani products! I was having consistent bowel issues. My doctor recommended a higher fiber diet and more cultured products (probiotics). When I first increased my fiber intake, I notice some bloating and discomfort (from any fiber source). It took me about one week at increased fiber levels for my system to adjust to it. Any discomfort was temporary and completely went away. Due to my lifestyle, it was difficult to add enough bulk fiber to my diet and that's when I discovered inulin as a great natural (soluble) fiber source and I consume many products that have it. Inulin is also a prebiotic fiber and has many proven gut health benefits. I have noticed a significant positive change in my health since increasing dietary fiber and adding inulin to my diet.

I actually have that same gassy problem with stevia - I HATE it!!! I can immediately taste its nasty aftertaste and it gives me horrible stomach problems - so don't just jump on the fiber - it might not be the problem!

Chobani tastes like paste to me .. bleck. I agree .. buy plain yogurt / Greek yogurt and flavor it yourself :-)

Monica.

I recently discovered wallaby purely unsweetened. Fruit but no sugar in Greek yogurt. Tastes great. Can you investigate and see if it is too good to be true? I've gotten it from whole foods

So, I make my own (non-dairy) yogurt with soy milk and non dairy culture. I started doing this, although it's not entirely practical, because of all the additives in commercial brands. I decided to check on line for ingredients in some of the more healthy dairy yogurts and here they are, "Milk Non-Fat Pasteurized Cultured, Contains Live Active Cultures : S. Thermophilus, L. Bulgaricus, L. Acidophilus, Bifidus, L. Casei." So, if I ate dairy yogurt, these are the ingredients I'd be looking for.

Try Quark. It is a lot more expensive but only 2 WW points. Tastes really good.

Some people, not all , react and have digestive issues from foods high in FodMaps -chicory,insulin,and many sugars and vegetables and fruits.Anyone that has this problem has to be careful with these and fiber. So it isn't always that someone needs more fiber. Not all people are the same. It can make you very sick if so. If you have IBS and other digestion health issues take a look at The LowFodmap diet. Saved me from a lot of misery. It isn't that any food is bad, it just may no agree with some.

" inulin " Not insulin ( spell correct is not always correct) !

I stopped eating Chobani when I read this a while ago.

"Some consumers have complained that Chobani, headquartered in Norwich, N.Y., produces Greek yogurt with milk from cows fed with GMO animal feed."

Thank you for your hard work Lisa!!

I work for a grocery store and am a huge advocate for Siggis. Why try diet or franken' yogurt when you can just get the real stuff and doctor it up yourself with wholesome and real foods that your body can recognize, assimilate and metabolize? Our yogurt aisle is the entire depth of the grocery store and sadly there's only a handful I would recommend.

So what is wrong with eating just plain real food!!! Companies are always trying

to get us to buy the next "new" "Healthy" and "Natural" thing. I also found out that not all plain greek yogurt is just that. Need to see only milk and cultures listed in the ingredients some companies add fillers. "Greek Style" listed on the container is your first clue that "extra" stuff is in there. I was amazed when I first tried plain greek yogurt with fruit puree added. It tastes so fresh and clean.

I really like siggi skyr. While it does have 9g of sugar it also has 14 g of protein for 100 calories. Add fresh fruit and a tablespoon or two of granola. Yum

I remember when this product was first released, I was super excited about there not being any sugar or artificial sweeteners as they claim. Then, I read the ingredients and saw the stevia, and was very disappointed. While stevia is certainly better than other non-nutritive sweeteners, I personally am not a huge fan. What bothers me most about Chobani is their most recent fear mongering on social media, stating how superior their products are because they don't use artificial sweeteners like the Splenda that's used in other yogurts. They referred to these yogurt companies as "big yogurt" but Chobani, at this point, you are big yogurt.

Despite all this, it is pretty great of Chobani's founder to donate 10% of their shares to the employees who have been with them since the beginning when they go public! I definitely (clearly) have mixed feelings about Chobani.

I am SO frustrated with food manufacturers putting inulin in so many products because I have issues digesting it. It was giving me horrible stomach cramps. (doubled over in pain) I already get enough fiber in my food (fruits, veg, whole grain) I don't need it added to products. I have to read food labels very carefully. It's in almost all yogurt now (which is why I stick with fage) there is tons of it in Activia! It's also in many cereals, bars & snacks. I catch it every time (it's labeled as inulin or chicory root fiber)..I just wish it wasn't in products I used to eat.

Have you tried CLOVER ORGANIC VANILLA GREEK YOGURT? I'd love your input on it. I am trying to find a yogurt that is low in carbs/sugars but offer a lot of probiotics (at least 3 or more).

I have been eating the Chobani Flip simply 100 crunch raspberry chocolate twist. I saw someone else asked about the flip ones, but I would love to hear your feedback because I really do enjoy them and it one everyday. This is the only flavor I buy though because a lot of the 'flip' ones are higher in sugar than this one. Thanks!

I have noticed that there is a taste similar to soap on the first bite of the blueberry yogurt as well. After 2 bites that "taste" disappears. But why is it so?
