Healthiest Pizza at Dominos

October 4, 2017   9 Comments

Finding the healthiest pizza at Domino's takes some work. You would think that with all the nutrition information online that it would be easy.

Healthiest Pizza at Dominos

Unfortunately, because Domino's pizza has so many options including different crusts and toppings, it can be hard to find a healthy one.

Domino's, unlike your neighborhood pizza joint, has a Domino's calorie calculator for its pizza. You can also find a PDF of all the nutrition facts to wade through.

I took a look at the MeatZZa and Pacific Veggie (specialty Domino’s pizzas) as well as creating my own pizza to see if I could create my own healthy Domino’s pizza

This is the MeatZZa and I picked it to have a basis for comparison. Obviously, no one is going to think anything called MeatZZA is going to be the healthiest option.

The nutrition facts for one slice (1/8th of a large pie) of MeatZZa are:

370 calories, 17 g fat, 7 g saturated fat, 37 g carbohydrates, 3 g sugar, 16 g protein, 2 g fiber, 930 mg sodium, 12 SmartPts

Here is what you get for all those calories:

This photo is taken on a 9 inch salad plate (not a bigger dinner plate). I wasn’t surprised about the calorie amount as much as I was surprised by the sodium. When you bite into this slice, all you taste is salt.

It is kinda sad because it would be nice to taste the cheese, meats, and sauce but the amount of salt simply drowns out any other flavor.

BUZZZZZZ! Not healthy (or tasty).

This pizza is called the Pacific Veggie and I chose it because it sounded healthy to me. It has roasted red peppers, onions, tomatoes, black olives and SPINACH. Take that Popeye! When you look at it, do you see all of that? I don’t. I only see a sea of cheese.

I thought this pizza was going to be a big improvement over the MeatZZA but I was not impressed. It seems Domino’s has figured out a way to ruin a pile of vegetables.

The nutrition facts for one slice (1/8 of the pizza) of Pacific Veggie:

310 calories, 11 g fat, 5 g saturated fat, 37 g carbohydrates, 4 g sugar, 13 g protein, 3 g fiber, 660 mg sodium, 10 SmartPts

This did taste better to me than the MeatZZa (less salty) but all I could really taste this time was the cheese.

BUZZZZ! Better but still not a healthy choice.

Here is a pizza that I created using Dominos calorie calculator

It has a thin crust, light cheese, and mushrooms, onions, green peppers, and roasted red peppers.

If you ask for thin crust and light cheese you will cut the calories in half on Domino’s pizzas.

This time, my slice was 160 calories!!

160 calories, 7 g fat, 2.5 g saturated fat, 14.0 g carbohydrates, 1 g sugar, 3 g protein, 1.0 g fiber, 300 mg sodium, 5 SmartPts

Now the fat is under control, the sodium is okay, and you have a serving of vegetables. Is it still pizza? Well, it was a little strange to have so little cheese but I thought it tasted the best of the bunch. The crust was more like a cracker than I expected.

Once you decide that you want to try a lighter Domino's version of a pizza – you might find that you like it. Take the risk!

RINNNNGG!! The healthiest pizza at Dominos!

Another factor to consider is that this healthy version was the least expensive choice. On carryout pizzas, they charge you $10 for a pizza with 5 toppings. The specialty pizzas were $16!

I think this is a win-win. You save money and eat healthier.

Makes you really think about you're intake. However the thin crust was based off of 1 slice, meaning 1 square?

I don't know why we judge the merits of a pizza based on how much cheese is on it. If you go to a real Italian-style pizza joint, you'll find that the cheese is very light. I actually don't like a ton of cheese on my pizza. All that white "gooeyness" turns my stomach.

Thanks for the review. I rarely eat pizza, but I do live near a Domino’s, so this is good info, just in case! 🙂

When I was single and ordered pizza more often than I should, I *always* chose Domino's thin crust. I can't stomach (pun intended) standard thick pizza crust!

Chain pizza houses fail on all accounts: Crust, sauce and cheese. As an admitted pizza snob, I contend pizza is just one of those things that can’t be mass produced. Having a truly good Italian pizza is an experience that will beckon your return. If salt is a concern, hold the ‘mutz’ and ask for parmesan instead. If salt is a serious concern due to HBP, try homemade. Some of the best pizzas I’ve had were homemade with a scant amount of parmesan. I would strongly suggest everyone try their hand at making a pizza dough just once. Making pizza together is so much fun and just takes a little preplanning. You control the salt and increase the goodness. Plus the aroma of pizza baking in your kitchen is soo intoxicating. Mangia!

P.S. Here’s a fascinating article on salt I just read this morning:

@Candace - I think it is wierd that Domino's chose to cut my pizza in squares. The calorie amount is for 1/8th of a pizza (same as the other pizzas).

Thanks for your question!

I was laughing at the title thinking what an oxymoron! I love pizza, it is one of my favorites and decided years ago if I was going to use calories for it I would only eat the good stuff. Unless of course there are no options at an event or something. I go to local Italian places when I want a good pizza. When my kids want to order from Dominoes or Papa Johns I am fine with it because I know I wont eat any lol!

My husband & I enjoy a healthier veggie pizza. I just wish a whole wheat or whole grain crust was available. Does anyone know if any freshly made pizzas are made with a whole grain crust?

As a Dominos employee, one easy way to cut down on salt is to ask for no garlic oil. The thin crust is actually a tortilla so opt for the Brooklyn instead.
