Try This Healthy Pie.....Naked

Here at Snack Girl headquarters clothing is optional (for the 4 and under set). This is also true of our pies.

Naked Apple Pie Recipe

I learned of the "Naked" pie concept when I made a mistake. One night, while making an apple pie, I chopped too many apples to fit into my pie crust. So, I just tossed the apples into a bread pan and cooked them along side the pie.

Guess what?

I like the NAKED pie better than the real pie that I had baked. I don't know why but I didn't even miss the 8 tablespoons of butter that go into a pastry crust.

And, I learned that "going crustless" meant that I could skip an entire step of apple pie baking! Making (or buying) a crust. I don't like the frozen crusts much - though there have been some good ones showing up in stores.

Making a pastry crust is pretty easy if you have a food processor, but do I really have time to be making pie crusts? Hey, I hardly have time to brush my hair, forget lovingly rolling out a chilled dough ball into the perfect crust.

Now, you could have told me to add butter, oats, and sugar to the top to make an apple crumble. Seriously, I don't think this pie needs anything to make it taste delicious.

In the recipe below, I have included 3 spices to make the pie really flavorful. You can adjust as needed, but I find adding powdered ginger gives the pie a nice kick. You could also grate some fresh ginger into the pie if you have some.

For Weight Watchers followers, this pie has a whopping 1 Points+ per serving. You see, the apples are a "FREE" food so the only ingredients I had to count were the sugar, etc.

I made 2 pie plates so 1/4 pie is a serving in this recipe. It is gooey, sweet, sour, spicy, and it will change your mind about eating your pie dressed.

Removing the crust renders my naked apple pie vegan and gluten-free.

Below, I added a cool gadget I found on Amazon.com for peeling, slicing, and cutting up apples for pies. I have a THING for kitchen gadgets and I am going to try to get my hands on one.

I have apple trees in my back yard, so this would be a good investment for me. Have any of you tried one of these?

Do you have suggestions for making pie healthier?

Dear Snack Girl,
I think I love you.
Amen.

@ShalomSeeker - love ya right back :)

Add some oats and walnuts and you have a crumble pie. Delicious!

We have an apple corer/peeler/slicer but it's mounted on a wood base and we love it! It makes things easier for sure... It also makes yummy strings of apple skin! :P

that sounds delicious. i always leave the skins on my apples, though, because that's where all the vitamins are, and i love the skins! and it's too much work to peel them. this might be my healthy contribution to Easter dinner!

Is there a certain type of apple that works best for this? I'd love to make it today!

@hairballs3 -I like McIntosh or if you are looked for a tart pie - Granny Smith. But, any type of apple will work. Let me know how it goes!

Kirstie, you should bake your apple skin strips into apple skin chips! :D that sounds ultra yummy!

Just curious - is the 136 calories for one piece, or the whole thing? My dad seriously needs to start eating better, for his health's sake, but is a complete dessert junkie and apple pie is his favorite. I would LOVE to make this for him!

I make a similar dish in the MICROWAVE... it's a side dish that goes great with pork chops or as a dessert or anywhere in between. Very similar to the cinnamon apple side you get at Chili's. I do have one of these apple peeler/corer/slicer things but i find it makes the apples too thin in their slices - i like a chunkier apple. I use your other apple gadget (the OXO hand-held apple snack maker) more often than my peeler/corer/slicer. I know that mine does not allow you to just peel/core. It has to slice, as well. I think Pampered Chef makes one that will either peel/core or peel/core/slice so you can slice at your own discretion if you want. That type would be worth the investment. Happy shopping!

Yum! We use the peeler, corer thing from Pampered Chef and it works well as long as the apples are firm. If they are not firm enough it will spin the core out and leave you with the whole chunk of apple, which is pretty easy to just cut up! It is great with kids and makes short work of a bushel basket of apples! Thanks for all of your deliciousness...looking forward to more searching!

@Whitney - 136 calories is for 1/4 pie - you can make 2 pie plates with this recipe. I hope your dad likes it!

I have the "cool gadget" you're looking at. I love it. Mine apple pealer corer slicer is probably 5 years old and still works great!

Oh! I just realized this is a healthier version of "Fried Apples" that you can get in jars at Cracker Barell! I love those ( I honestly don't know if Cracker Barell exists in your neck of the woods and I still owe you a photo and review of Blue Bell Ice cream!) But baked apples are a universally delicious treat and this is just so pretty!

I made "Lighter Eggplant Parmesan" for dinner and I added this dessert today...YUM!! Kids and my lovely wife loved it!! It was an AWESOME combination.... I appreciate you!!

MR. LOCOSTAR

Hmm, I can't figure out what I did wrong but one of the spices is REALLY overpowering. Is it supposed to be?

@Becky - well, the spice mix is a bit strong in this recipe because I like it that way - sorry about that - next time just use less.

mmmm....I love the WW crustless pumpkin pie...but I'll definitely try this one! What a nice evening treat!

Dear Snack Girl,

Just yesterday I was thinking I needed to revisit/refind this recipe, and then today you linked us to it! Thanks for reading my mind. (But let's stick to just the recipe section, okay? ;o)

Still love you,

-ShalomSeeker

I LOVE this recipe, but as a long-time Weight Watchers member, I thought I should let you know that those nutritionals will give you 4 PointsPlus, not 1. (I enjoy it anyway!) :o)

Try it topped with some fake icecream made out of bananas. recipe claims to be 0 WW points but not sure.

1. SLICE and FREEZE your super right bananas. It’s really important to slice your bananas BEFORE you freeze them or you can burn out the motor in your blender, chopper, food processor

2. Add a splash of vanilla extract and 1 Tbsp of Fat Free Milk,Almond Milk or Chocolate Almond milk and blend away until smooth and creamy. May need an additional Tbsp of milk if to thick

Depending on the apples, I would only use a sprinkling of brown sugar for my sweetener, and it would still be plenty sweet and much healthier!

Have I told you yet that I luv you, your blog,

and your amazingly, easy, delicious and fabulously fun snacks! Keep up the good work you are the BEST! LW

Yes, sadly cooked fruit does have points :(

For example, 1 cup cooked apple is 2 points+.

I do a similar thing, but I poach my apples in apple cider instead of baking them and I like them SUPER SPICEY so I add a bunch of spices, way more than normal! Another trick is to get that elusive cheese cloth to keep whole cloves and very important WHOLE PEPPER CORNS! They make everything else taste better! I add no sugar to my pies and do a butter, oatmeal, little brown sugar & again... lots of spice to my crumble top. There is nary a crumb left each year.

Really like these recipes

I was interested in making the apple skin crisps! What do I add to them & how long do I bake & at what temp? Thank you! Love your website! I'm a new subscriber!

Dear snack girl, first of all.. I'm glad to gave found your website. I have suggestion for making the pie healthier and reducing the calories. Inn stead of using sugar you can replace that with stevia... This is a natural sweet herb herb. It's sold in powder form. However.. Make sure to buy real stevia (at least 90%). This herb can be used to sweeten almost anything and it's also good for people who are diabetic :-) ... Greetings from the Netherlands!

I have one of those apple peelers, it is wonderful! I use it for peeling and coring apples for applesauce (I make literally gallons from our trees), its also good for potatoes, you can have it peel but not cut, cut but not peel, or do both. I love making french fry rings with it.

Is there anything I could use instead of the aluminium foil? I don't have an oven but an microwave which has some "oven-like" combos, although I cannot put aluminium.

Have you ever considered adding a Pinterest button to your site? I like to save recipes in one spot on the Internet and Pinterest seems to be working for me.

Can you post that "Lighter Eggplant Parmesan "? All your recipes sound nummy!

I do have one of those apple(potato, also) peeler things. They are GREAT!

Delicious!!! I calculated the points also and got 4 points.

How can that be...with apples and spices??? I did not use the cornstarch...is that part of the high carb count???

Helloooo Snack Girl!!! What a nice blog/site!

Have you tried substituting corn starch in this recipe with arrowroot powder since corn starch is GMO?

Love how you help people!!!

Cant wait to try these resieps thankyou
