Don’t Eat Your Breakfast Here

May 1, 2014   27 Comments

Snack Girl knows how hard it can be to eat a healthy breakfast in the morning. I frequently get to work and feel like putting my head on my desk.

Taco Bell Waffle Sandwich Nutrition Facts

Yesterday, we lost one of my son’s shoes and because he is growing so fast (and kid’s shoes are so expensive)– he only has one pair of shoes that fit. After the bus had passed our house, my daughter found the rogue shoe and I was saved from the humiliation of sending my son to school in socks.

Did I eat breakfast? No. I didn’t. Did I stop at Taco Bell? No, I didn’t. I did, however, go there today to sample their new breakfast offering – the Waffle Taco. I left the photo in color above because I found the look of it completely unappetizing. Doesn’t it look like it landed from outer-space?

Why did I go try it? I try these fast food offerings because I want to motivate people to STAY AWAY. I have gotten flamed for writing about this stuff but I continue to do it.

Fast food breakfast is estimated to be a 30 billion dollar industry so don’t tell me there isn’t someone out there reading this on their phone– standing in line at this very moment – ordering breakfast at a fast food chain.

Waffle Taco with Sausage nutrition facts:

370 calories, 23 g fat, 7 g saturated fat, 28 g carbohydrates, 8 g sugar, 12 g protein, 1 g fiber, 550 mg sodium, 10 Points+

Ouch! The fat here is really out of control. My breakfast sandwich – Baked Eggs and Cheese in Toast Cups - has about 9 grams of fat and it uses both eggs and cheese.

I will admit to inhaling all of this taco because I found that it tasted really good. I was shocked because I thought it was going to taste like a chemical sandwich but I didn’t taste anything off. It is scary how quickly I ate 370 calories and, yes, I was hungry again before lunch.

I hadn’t read the nutrition facts BEFORE I ate it. Whoops! It seems that Taco Bell has figured out how to hit that fatty, salty, sweet bliss point with this sandwich.

Why is Taco Bell making breakfast?

"Breakfast is still the most under-penetrated daypart for the restaurant industry," Tristiano (a fast-food analyst) told The Huffington Post. "So many individuals either skip or eat breakfast at home that there's a huge opportunity to get consumers out there."

(I love that he uses the word “penetrated” because it makes me think of another word that we will all be if we eat this stuff. But, I am not going to share that word because this is a family website.)

Noooooooo! Stay home, eat your breakfast, and try something from this list if you are tempted to eat a fast food meal – Top Ten Breakfast Ideas.

To Taco Bell I would say, we are not simply consumers but HUMANS who need nourishing food. We do not need to be penetrated by a Waffle Taco or whatever other fat, salt, and artificial-ingredient filled “food” you come up with.

Have you heard about the Waffle Taco? What do you think?

THAT LOOKS SO DISGUSTING. I have no idea why anyone would eat it.

Gah! I'll stick with my Non-GMO Project Verified cereal! I dont like breakfast as much anyway but do eat my cereal each morning.

You shouldn't have left the color in... I love the Snack Girl tradition of B&W (or dull) presentation of things that aren't food.

OK, I'll be the first to admit that I think it actually looks and sounds good!

That being said, I won't get one. I am a stay at home mom so I have no excuse to eat breakfast at a fast food place! My husband has been known to put two homemade waffles together with eggs and bacon in between...very similar and probably a lot better tasting.

That looks pretty greasy. What's the phrase? Oh yeah - "Glistening with fat." Yuck.

I can see why you were hungry before lunch. I'll take real food any time.

It looks good but I don't do the fast food thing for breakfast. Also, because I am lucky not to past one at all getting to work and I'm not driving out of my way in the morning for breakfast. Lucky Me

What is the old adage about not eating with ingredients your grandmother wouldn't recognize, or anything with ingredients you can't pronounce?! Geesh! And BTW, what are natural and artificial flavorings? They are the food industries secret weapon to keep us addicted to JUNK FOOD!

I'm not a big fast food breakfast fan (except for Subway) and seeing ads on TV for Taco Bell breakfast i was a little curious. I'm SO glad I didn't go buy one of these things!! This looks disguisting! way to shiny.. food shouln't be shiny.. :) thanks for the info!

I'm getting heartburn just looking at that photo.

By my quick calculation, the saturated fat content is approx 35% of the recommended daily amount. I can't bear to calculate the sodium percentage.

I concur ... this looks like barf on a "waffle". I can't imagine the grease that is soaked into this thing. You know, the longer I stay away from this stuff, the nastier is looks and sounds, not even tempting. I actually don't feel well if I eat fast food - my kids don't want it anymore either. My 12 year old and I have decided pop is out too, my 4 year old still and won't have it.

Why do you get burned? Because you speak the truth? I agree that people should have freedom to eat fast food if you want but you should know the damage you are doing if it is an item like this one! Just know the damage. Especially if you are one who does it daily like one of my friends did. I agree it looks greasy like my gallbladder would just walk out of my body and say, "I give up!" LOL!

It looks good to me. If you leave off some of that cheese you would probably lose a lot of the fat. But then fat is not as bad for you as you think. Even saturated fat is making a comeback! If you could swap the sausage for bacon that would help as well.

One of my go-to fast breakfasts: the night before, in a small sauce pan with a lid: 1/2 cup rinced quinoa, 1/2 cup steel cut oats, 2 cups water. Bring to boil, simmer 5 minutes, turn heat off. Put lid on, go to bed. (Leave on stove) In morning, enjoy with a splash water added and microwaved to warm, add anything-- fruit, honey, cinnamon. Refridgerate extra -- enough for 4 days breakfasts-if you are the only one in your household who loves good-for you starts.

I love the steak and egg burrito. I wonder how bad it is. Looks much better than this!

I love Snack-Girl baked eggs / cheese toast cups! I make them with 1/2 bread round and an egg - like egg on toast - and sometimes add a bit of low fat cottage cheese after they come out of the oven. They are divine and two keep me filled up till lunch time for 7-8 points (depending on cottage cheese amount). I am always hungry when I wake up and can't imagine waiting till I'm on my way to work to eat breakfast!

In just one bar of 40 grams there is less protein as much fat and almost as many carbs. In just one little bar! Half the calories are from fat 18% of which is saturated fat. One bar has only 7 grams of protein vs the 12 of the Taco Bell entree. Most Kind bars have 3 grams.

Sorry, I don't eat them but your argument does not hold waffles. : )

KIND may have a better looking food but just about the same fat, sugar and less protein. It is a glorified candy bar without the vitamins and minerals that eggs and sausage have.

Check out LEVEL bars or Pure Protein bars. They have the balance and additional vitamins and minerals.

I am amazed, after looking at it, that there are ONLY 370 calories in that thing. I sometimes eat the egg white and turkey sausage breakfast sandwich from Starbucks, and I think it is also over 300 calories, but not nearly as much greasy cheese! I do love Subway for breakfast.. An egg white and steak flatbread with lots of veggies and just a dash of sweet teriyaki dressing. It's not what I can make at home, true, but when we are traveling and have to stop somewhere, I think it is a yummy option!

Thank you for your sacrifice to your diet. I agree with Tanya, ignore the grief you get. Some of of do eat that stuff because the incessant commercials give you that craving. Once you take that first taste, though, you wonder why it was so necessary to eat that item! I appreciate your effort in this fight to be healthy. If you don't eat the stuff every day, once in awhile will be fine.

We don't have that many Taco Bells around here and after the news yesterday about their 88% beef and 12% ewww, not going there any time soon. That being said there really aren't that many places to have breakfast if you're on a diet. Got railroaded into going to IHOP last Saturday and had the lighter breakfast. Egg substitute with a slice of wheat toast two pieces of turkey bacon and a fruit salad. Not that bad really but the places grosses me out somrtimes.

Good lord, good lord. I know that you have a custom of photographing certain food items in black and white, to make them look less appetizing. In this instance, you didn't need to. Gad, that's as ugly as deep-fried sin.

I love your website! At least you are honest about eating the waffle taco! I love your input (got California olive ranch olive oil-yum) and recipes. Keep it up!

My breakfast all last week - One of your turkey sausage patties and one egg muffin that I made in a cupcake tin (scrabbled 12 egg whites and 4 yolks, then bake). I eat breakfast at 4:30AM so this helps keep me full until 9:00 when I have some peanut butter on a rice cake until lunch.

Thank you Snack Girl for the heads-up! I happen to get my dose of entertainment on-line so I'm not up on the latest fast food crazes via TV ads or regurgitated news shows. I do avoid all fast food except for an occasional coffee but I find it interesting [though not totally surprising] how the FF industry continues to ply its awful creations on an ever-increasing population that is becoming aware of poor food choices and demanding labels, organics, real ingredients, local, fresh, whole foods, etc. I took a few minutes to research this carnival ''breakfast'' and see the hype, the free advertisements via news sites, the TV spot, then since I doubted that 370 calorie count, took a cursory look at the individual ingredients to see if it was even close. One 4'' x 4'' waffle-115, 1 sausage patty-170, 1 egg-80, 1oz cheddar cheese-113, 1 Tbsp syrup-53=531!

[I didn't include butter but used McD sausage info with the rationale that TB is not using a healthier version with all that glistening fat!] I may be way off but 531 calories sure seems closer from the looks of that shiny concoction. Anyway, it was a fun exercise, I'll take your advice and steer clear of Taco WT! I like my waffles homemade with fresh or frozen fruit, real maple syrup, and only on special occasions!

When I pick up breakfast on workdays, I stop at the locally owned deli in my building (he gets his bread stuff from a local bakery). He makes me an English muffin sandwich with freshly scrambled egg and real cheese. It tastes remarkably like what I would make at home if I were there. Plus I'm patronizing 2 local businesses.

We recently bought a Sous Vide controller for our crock pot, and it's made something interesting for breakfast: eggs! This past week I did my own breakfast sandwiches by taking one of these eggs I prepared beforehand, and cracking it into a split muffin. We cooked it just right so it's almost like a thick custard and cream cheese! It's so unique! It worked perfect, sprinkled with some cheese and a spread of avocado and a slice of tomato. Absolutely fantastic! The controller's not cheap at $100, but it makes for some unique cooking besides just the eggs!

ummm why are there ingredients for eggs.... that is SO GROSS!
