The Problem With Trail Mix Solved

May 13, 2011   129 Comments

Trail mix should be the perfect snack. It is portable and will stay fresh in your backpack for hours!

Flanigan Farms Trail Mix

The problem is that many packaged trail mixes are in big portions and it can be difficult to stop yourself from eating all of it. Whenever I buy trail mix, I take a good hard look at the nutrition facts and the serving size.

Flanigan Farms has created the perfect trail mix snack because they help you control the portion size.

The individually packaged one ounce portion makes it easy to have a nutritious snack without worrying about how much you are consuming.

These packaged trail mixes don't include chocolate or salt - and they still taste delicious. Here are the nutrition facts for the Nuts 'N' Fruit Trail Mix:

130 calories, 8 g fat, 12 g carbohydrates, 4 g protein, 1 g fiber, 0 mg sodium, 4 Points+

Ingredients:

California Almonds, Raisins, Dates (dusted with oat flour to separate), Cashews, Sunflower Seeds, Pepitas (pumpkin seeds), and Dried Organic Fuyu Persimmons (when available)

And, Flanigan Farms has come up with a healthy school fundraiser. The last time a group of students asked me to buy something - it was cookie dough! I just gave them money to avoid the calories (perhaps this was their plan).

I would have much preferred to buy trail mix from a group of students - check out Flanigan Farms School Fundraising if you are looking to help out at your school.

Flanigan Farms is giving away some trail mix to a Snack Girl reader.

My favorite is one with craisons, sunflower seeds and cashews... (Trader Joe and Target both have it)

I have to admit I never looked too closely at all the ingredients and haven't had it since I went back on WW because I know it is high in point values.

I love trail mix and like the idea of one that is easily portioned controlled and healthier.

I make it with unsalted, raw cashews, almonds, walnuts and dried cranberries.

I love fnuts and fruit!

I saw a good one in Walmart last night that had dried bananas, cashews, and raisins in it but if I had to make my own I would want dried bananas, apricots, unsalted cashews, sunflower seeds and almonds.

I love tropical nuts - like macadamia and lots of salty flavors! YUM!

I make my own trail mix! I buy packages of nuts, seeds, and dried fruit from Whole Foods or Trader Joe's and combine them. It makes like 7 cups and lasts me a month! Just keep it in jars and scoop out 1/4 cup at a time for 170 very filling and delicious calories!

My current favorite is almonds, cashews, dried cherries, and sunflower seeds!

I love dates in my trail mix! Yummy!

Tweeted :)

Nuts are my favorite providing a good source of protein.

I like peanuts, cashews, almonds, pumpkin seeds, coconut, and yes I do like M&Ms in it once in a while! :)

Oh these actually look awesome.. I get scared when making trail mixes because of how the pts. add up so fast but they are so good. So looking at this I am super curious & wanting to find them & for 12 that's not a bad price Thanks for sharing!

Individually bagged is PERFECT and either flavor sounds fantastic. I am going to look into the fundraiser page. My teenager daughter is taking a 16-day European trip in Summer 2012. They each pay their own way, but are fundraising as a group to put towards meals and excursions. This is a HEALTHY food sale that's finally different from all the other JUNK out there. Thanks Snack Girl!! Once again your blog is amazing! :)

I do like the chocolate in there...but raisins & almonds are my favorite!

I love dried cherries, dark chocolate and nuts. Thank trader joes for that combo. Delish!

My fav trail mix is the Omega Trek Mix from Trader Joes- they come in prepackaged ones too!! It contains omega 3 fortified cranberries, almonds, walnuts, pepitas (pumpkin seeds), pecans, and pistachios! yummm

I love the healthy combo of fruits and nuts - perfect snack for my son and I!

I love dried strawberries in trail mix - they don't look pretty, but they taste awesome! I always love whole almonds and mango pieces too. I am glad to see the individual bags of trail mix, because it is so hard to only eat one serving!

I'm a fan of GORP - good ole peanuts and raisins.

I like all natural almonds w/ dried cranberries.

I love anything that has dried fruit and nuts. That always fills me up. I love that these come in 1 serving bags!

I'm a big fan of peanut butter chips in my trail mix!

I had one from Trader Joes that had dried cherries in it. They were yummy!

My favorite trail mix would include almonds and dried cranberries!

What I like? Almonds are a must, sunflower kernels are nice, oats are yum! and golden raisins would be cool! The simpler, the better.

I love mixing Emerald Cocoa Almonds with Kashi Go-Lean Cereal and Dried Blueberries! It's the perfect snack on the go!

I love the fact that there's no salt added! My husband and I really need to watch our sodium intake and this would be perfect for snack time :-) I love all kinds of trail mix, btw!

I love fruit and nuts...no chocolate, and no yogurt "things"

I love to make my own "mix". I add dried berries, raw almonds, cashews, pumpkin seeds, and sometimes a few chocolate chips!

Mmmmm! I love fruit & nuts! Dried fruit and nuts would taste really good right about now! Trail mix, here I come! :)

I like just about anything that comes in trail mix! But I suppose chocolate & almonds & dried cherries does sound delish, as one of your previous posters said.

Those look great! Perfect for school lunches. I like to mix cheerios, popcorn, peanuts and raisins together. If I'm feeling naughty I'll throw in a few dark chocolate m&m's

I love almonds and dried fruit together. And dark chocolate would be nice too. :-)

The one I love has dried pineapple, cashews, almonds and dried cherries. So delicious!

Almonds, walnuts, pistachios, dates & dried tart cherries!

I love trail mix & always keep some on me for emergencies since I run around alot with my business.

Question - I see alot of you mentioning different types of dried fruits. I've heard or been told in the past that dried fruits are bad sugar wise. That the drying process converts it and it's no longer a good fruit sugar but more of a candy type sugar. Could you all please help me understand this and why it's ok in this context?

Thanks!

Dena

I like to make my own for our family: Dark Chocolate covered craisins and almonds or M&Ms, Mixed Nuts and Dried Craisins .... ymmmmm .... I tend to eat waaaaaaaaaayyyyyyy to much of it though :-(

One of my favorite mixes is from The Cherry Hut in MI. It's probably not that healthy but it's packed with huge roasted nuts and dried tart cherries.

Lots of nuts n' dried fruits.

I follow you on FB!

I love almonds or cashews in mine as the nuts, I try to stay away from the ones with chocolate because I get carried away.

I LOVE trail mix. I often make up my own mix and sometimes buy it at Wal-Mart. Since I try and not each too much junk food, this is my "junk food." As always, Wal-Mart has huge bags. I usually measure out a serving size and put it in a zip lock because if I take the whole bag with me, it will be gone before lunch. The individually wrapped portions seem like the

B-O-M-B!!

I love nuts and dried fruit, but chocolate & a LITTLE salt make trail mix so satisfiying. Controlling the portion is a problem. I try to weigh out portions, but sometimes..........

I LOVE the Trader Joe's, Happy Trekking trail mix that included dried cranberries and cherries. I've learned not to take the whole bag to work since I tend to devour it all in one sitting. I put small servings in ziplocks and take a bag a day. The individually wrapped ones would certainly save me time!

I love trail mix and nuts by themselves. I love keeping them in the car snack bag for the kids because they don't go bad, they don't freeze in the winter or melt in the summer. Pine nuts, pepitas, cashews, cranberry, almonds, sunflower seeds. NO coconut.

I love trail mix with a variety of nuts and seeds, and a little bit of sweet from raisins! And a bit of coconut never hurts either

I love anything with a bit of dark chocolate! Not too much to make it a full dessert, but something like the cocoa covered almonds, mixed with dried friut is so tasty! Also, love the idea of dried persimmons--so delicious!

The best is almonds, dried fruit and sunflower seeds. Yummy!

I doubt there is any that I wouldn't eat, but I love almonds, raisins or craisins, and sunflower seeds.

When I would go on family hikes as a kid, my mom would add carob chips or yogurt chips to her homemade trail mix (which also included peanuts, raisins, and sunflower seeds). The carob and yogurt made the mix seem exotic. It was better than anything you could be in the store because there was no added sugar, salt, or oil. The Flanigan Farms mix sounds amazing as well. And since it is perfeclty portioned, I don't have to worry about ruining a healthy hike with too much snacking afterwards!

I love nuts in mine, and a bit of chocolate! I love the oriental mixes, they have this sweet cracker in it...kind of square but twisted, I think they're called rice crackers!

I LOVE my trail mixes to have lots of texture....crunchy, chewy, nutty, good. Nuts and dried fruit are staples in my at home versions I make so these on the go packets would be perfect.

I follow you on facebook.

I follow you on twitter

I love dried tart cherries and cashews together. the Flanigan Farms Nuts and Things sounds good too.

My fave trail mix is when i add my own raw pecans and almonds to a tropical trail mix i buy at the store that has pineapple, coconut, papaya, and raisins. Yum-o! A small handful is great on top of oatmeal... yep, now i gotta go eat some. Ha!

I love almonds in my trailmix!!

I'm following you on twitter and I just tweeted about this :)

Love peanuts, walnuts, craisins, chocolate, cashews, ok, any kind of nuts!

dried cherries and dried blueberries with almonds and peanuts prrrfect!

I love butterscotch chips in my trail mix. It's pretty much required if I'm making my own. I also like cashews and M&Ms. Raisins/Crasins are awesome too! :)

Walnuts, dried cranberries, banana chips, apricot and almonds. Yummy!

my two favorite are by planter's nut rition

antioxidant mix: mixing almonds, bananas, peaches, blueberries, cranberries and cashews

bone health mix: almonds, granola clusters, yogurt-covered raisins, peaches, raspberries and cashews,

I love love love (unsweetened) coconut in my trail mixes.

I really need to make my own! I would put dried cherries, pecans, coconut and dark choc chips

I love dried bananas and almonds!

I like the tartness of dried cherries or cranberries with nuts like almonds or cashews in my trail mix. (I love the ones with chocolate chips too!)

@Dena, I'm not sure about converting "good" fruit sugar to "bad" sugar - but I think that since the fruit dries out and is concentrated, it easy easier to eat more! (This is why regular fruit is 0 points on WW, but dried fruit is still counted - something like 3-4 points for 1/4 cup). Sprinking it on oatmeal or yogurt is a good way to enjoy without overindulging. I think the readers who mentioned mixing in Kashi cereal, or cheerios or popcorn have the right idea too in terms of enjoying more volume without overdoing. That said, the portion control of these bags would be good too!

I love trail mix with cashews, craisins and other dried fruit, coconut(yum!), and sunflower seeds.

I love dried cranberries and chocolate covered soynuts mixed with raw almonds. delicious!

I love a good combination of salty and sweet...cashews, almonds, pumpkin seeds, with chocolate chips, dried fruit (especially dates), and COCONUT FLAKES!

Pick me please! I love food!

I love anything with Coconut and pecans!

Hmmm ... I like sunflower seeds, peanuts, raisins .... sometimes m&ms

I would do almonds, blueberries, cranberries, maybe cocoanut...I'd like to see dried blueberries WITHOUT sugar. I love blueberries, but the only dried ones I've ever found are highly sugared. Anyone have any ideas?

I am a fan on FB and I commented on your page!

I follow on Twitter and am trying to tweet, lol! (Twitter is having a problem)

I love raisins, almonds, pecans, craisins- no peanuts, no pumpkin seeds though :-)

I also love ones with chocolate--and just eating a 1/4 cup of trail mix doesn't seem very filling or take long enough to nosh (although it IS perfect as intended to give concentrated calories on a hike in a couple handfuls!)

So I usually mix my trail mix. 1/3 packaged trail mix, 1/3 puffed grain cereal (rice or corn are ideal, millet is a little small...) and 1/3 crunchy cereal--my current favorite to include is Kashi Heart to Heart Cinnamon! Then you have a larger quantity but less fatty/concentrated than pure trail mix which it's easy to eat 500 calories worth of...

I like lots of dried fruit.

wasabi peas and sesame sticks

I like peanut butter chips or chocolate chips

My favorite trail mix combo is

1. Cereal (twigs, Cheerios, Chex Mix, etc)

2. Craisins and/or cranberry cherries. I'm not a fan of raisins at all.

3. Dark chocolate
4. MAYBE whole wheat/grain mini pretzels
5. Almonds/cashews/pistachios
...and yup, that's about it :)

There's far too many yummy one to pick one combo but I love dreid cherries and cranberries in mine. Add in some pecans and it's heavenly.

sadly, I must confess...I LOVE the M&m's, dark chocolate pieces, almonds and Craisins! I know I know but sometimes I just gotta let go of all I know! Just wish I could do a 2 hour hike afterward and that those calories would burn right off, like they used to before...ahem...the midlife metabolic sLoooooooooooooooooowdown :) Somethings, like chocolate and almonds are just plain worth it tho!

I have to say that trail mix is my dream snack, because of how good I feel after I eat it! My favorite combo is dried fruit, particularly dried apricots and cherries, almonds, raisins, and sunflower seeds!

i like coconut, apricots, cashews and dates. Pretty much anything tropical. I can't stand peanuts especially in trail mix. Hope you get a chance to visit my site.

http://thehealthygourmet.wordpress.com/

I love your site! This is my first time commenting, but I check your site daily. Great job! :)

Some dried bananas and/or craisins, and anything with cashews, almonds, chocolate....not a healthy mix, just yummy.

Pecans, walnuts, sunflower seeds, raisins, cranberries, coconut

I love most nuts and a bit of chocolate chips and fruit. Especially banana chips. Thanks, Jen

my favorite combination includes walnuts, cashews, raisins, pistachios, dried cranberries and granola clusters!

I love peanuts, almonds and something with a little sweetness

I usually get stuff in the bulk aisle when I'm baking (dried fruit, walnuts, peanuts, etc.), then I just take the leftovers and toss them all together to make my own trail mix!

I like to make my own with dark chocolate chips, dried blueberries, and walnuts; sometimes with pretzels, dried cherries and cheerios too. I try not to make it often b/c I will eat way too much of it!

I love anything with dark chocolate and cashews - those ingredients, of course, also happen to be the most fattening thing you could put in trail mix! Lol...

I love the Kirkland Trail Mix from Costco. The problem is, it comes in a huge bag and I have a hard time knowing when to stop eating it.

I personally love dates, dried berries, peanuts, and salted cashews! I send trail mix in the kiddos lunch almost every day....the other kids get jealous :)

any nut/seed and dried fruit combo is Great! Except for dried banana - yuk

I like to mix my own with some plain roasted almonds, walnuts, roasted edamame and some dried cranberries for a touch of sweetness. Simple, yet delicious and nutritious! :)

I make my own with mixed nuts, sunflower seeds, and chopped up dried apricots (that way I get the sweet bits but eat no more than one apricot per day).

I'm not too particular....any nuts, seeds and dried fruits!

Anything with chocolate....

my favorite trail mix flavors are the basics: dried fruit (love figs & pineapple) & nuts (cashews, pistachios, walnuts). i love that there isn't chocolate in this trail mix you reviewed!

I love Navitas trail mix with cashews, goji, golden, and mulberries, and cacao nibs. I stir some into my oatmeal!

I usually make my own, and it can have anything from macadamia nuts, almonds, dried cranberries/blueberries and cashews yo having pumpkin seeds and chia seeds. It's fun creating new combinations!

I *love* any way I can sneak a little dark chocolate in there. Get an ounce of dark chocolate and shave it. Gives every mouthful a little something extra. Also inmine I like pistachios, dried cranberries, apricots and a little coconut.

I recently tried a mix with dried blueberries. So sweet and chewy! LOVE walnuts too.

I love dried cranberries, appricots, cherries and all kinds of nuts except peanuts they are my least favorite nut.

I like cereal with sunflower seeds, craisins, and a few mini chocolate chips

I like a balance of crunchy and sweet - love, love, LOVE pecans but almonds usually work better. Cherries or craisins are good for sweet. And I love chocolate, so when I make my own, I usually include mini-chocolate chips or mini-M&Ms. Although I know it's healthier without them. ;)

I like raisins, cranberries, pepitas, almonds, and walnuts in my trail mix.

Raised on Girl Scout birdseed in the, well, never mind when. Who doesn't like trail mix? I'm going to seek out Flanigan Farms' products: quality ingredients + portion control = winning.

I love to have almonds, raisin, and any dried fruit the healthier the better.

My fav is from target under the archer farms brand, its called "Peanuts and Chocolate" and its got peanuts, yogurt covered peanuts, raisins, peanut butter chips, and m&ms! Or if I'm in the mood for something a bit healthier I love to make my own mix of almonds, dried blueberries, dried cranberries, and some pistachios!!

I love dried cherries, white chocolate and pretzels!

I really love dried fruit in my trail mixes! I also love seeds as well as nuts, roasted soybeans, pumpkin seeds... yum! Although these dont have chocolate in it, I want to give it a go, I normally rely on dark chocolate to power me through when Im having a trail mix day.

Definitely almonds and raisins or dried cherries. Everything else is a bonus :)

I love trail mix but don't really eat it much because of the potential for high calories and eating too much at once. I would love to try these portion controlled bags!

I never buy trail mix for the exact reasons above. I am emailing this information to our school principal and PTA President so we can use it for our next fundraiser.

I am addicted to nuts! I would love the chance to try these cute samples out, and knowing that they are portion controlled.....my waist line thanks you! I already like you on facebook, huge fan! My mix would be almonds, pumpkin seeds, brazil nuts, hemp seed, maple flavored flax seeds and of course cocoa powder! All mixed together ! Yum! Lots of protein and energy filled

I love almonds and raisins together.

I love dry roasted nuts (almonds, peacans, walnuts, peanuts, cashews, brazilnuts) and some dried fruit (raisins, chopped dates rolled in oat flour, etc.) I love to mix it up! Mmm

My favorite is a combo of cashews, almonds, macadamia nuts, and dried fruit. I just pack a one serving portion and am good to go!

i love almonds, craisins, dried papaya, pepitas, dried cherries, and walnuts

My favorite trail mix as butterscotch morsels in it, but I try to stay away from ones that are overly sweet now! Right now I've got some raisins, hemp plus granola, peanuts, almonds, carob covered raisins, dried cherries and blueberries, dried bananas, and walnuts. <3 This is my perfect GORP for hiking!

I love love love dry roasted almonds and cashews, pistachios, and any type of dried fruit like cranberries or blueberries.

I love raisins, bananas, m&ms, all kinds if nuts and any other dried fruit

I love peanuts in trail mix, especially because I don't eat them much in general!

I like dried fruit, soy nuts, almonds and cocoa nibs
