Mix It Up For A Delicious Snack

September 21, 2010   39 Comments

Do you sometimes get bored with the same old snack? Perhaps the snack you brought to work is SO dull, you make a little trip to the vending machine.

Cottage Cheese

Don't do it! All you need to do is dress your snack up a bit. Take it out for a makeover so you won't be tempted to satisfy your hunger with something crappy.

One way to dress things up is to add some spices. Cinnamon is one of my favorite spices. because it makes me think of apple pie and cinnamon buns. Aaah, cinnamon buns....

For this snack, I used cottage cheese. I absolutely love cottage cheese and I have never featured it on Snack Girl (shame on me!). It is naturally low in calorie, delicious, and full of protein and calcium.

One half a cup of 4% milkfat is only 120 calories, and lowfat cottage cheese is 90 calories. True confession: I prefer the higher fat content cottage cheese.

I actually got into an argument with an MD about cottage cheese. She pointed out to me that the removing the fat doesn't do anything nutritionally to the cottage cheese. While I understand that the lowfat cottage cheese remains the same, I think it tastes less delicious.

This is a real dilemma! Am I more concerned about my waistline or the tastiness of my snack? Well, I choose tastiness and I just try to eat less of it than if I was eating the lowfat cottage cheese. Portion size is as important in losing weight as well as making healthy choices.

Another important factor about cottage cheese is that different brands tend to taste REALLY different. I been unable to eat some brands that I have found in the supermarket. My favorite right now is Friendship - California Style.

I'm not sure what they mean by "California Style". Perhaps the cows went surfing before they were milked.

Other great foods to mix in cottage cheese are pineapple, cantaloupe, chopped dates, and apples.

Give this recipe a try and tell me what you think!

Great cottage cheese ideas! I always love new ideas for my afternoon snack! I actually just posted a list of some of my own favorite snacks on my blog yesterday if you want to give it a look: www.healthytodayhealthytomorrows.com

For some reason cottage cheese will keep me full longer than oatmeal. 1/2 cup of 2% and a piece of toast and I'm good till lunch.

I haven't tried it with cinnamon, I am more of a savory fan, just salt and lots of pepper for me!

I grew up on cottage cheese and jelly. But to be honest, I think CC tastes pretty darned good with most anything mixed into it :) I prefer mine sweet, DH prefers his as a simple breakfast side dish with salt and pepper.

on September 21, 2010

I am eating a whipped cottage cheese and tomato sandwhich for lunch. I mix in Mrs. Dash seasoning with the cottage cheese. Yum!

on September 21, 2010

Sorry ladies, I don't like cottage cheese. Most likely because in 1964 it was a staple of the Weight Watchers diet and I felt forced to eat it. Anyone have a sub idea for the CC? thanks, dotty aka judy

Hood's fat free with pineapple is pretty good...

on September 21, 2010

Daisy Brand cottage cheese is really good too!

Pesto

I LOVE Kemp's cottage cheese in the blue container. The price is going up, which is depressing and I have tried different brands, but nothing compares! I love the saltiness!

Favorite mix-ins? I grew up eating cottage cheese and applesauce mixed together, and now I like it plain or with pineapple. Or with lots of fresh black pepper.

Yummies.

I like cottage cheese too - though I haven't had it in a while. There's definitely something to be said for having a bit of fat and protein for keeping you full longer. For me the trick is adding some dried fruit and chopped nuts to my oatmeal - keeps me satisfied longer and means I don't grab a granola bar mid morning.

Also - and this is complete heresy - I heard that a bit of fat in dairy products (yogurt) helps you absorb the calcium ... no idea if its true though.

This is one of my favorite snacks! I do add a little spenda to it and sometimes a few toasted walnuts!

on September 21, 2010

I always grew up eating cottage cheese with canned peaches or pears. I still love this and try to get it in light syrup or natural juices--probably not as good as the straight fruit, but I love it! My husband thinks this is totally disgusting and sticks with black pepper on his. :)

Dotty - is it all dairy, or just cottage cheese that you don't care for? If you can handle other dairy, you can try ricotta, farmer's cheese or greek yogurt.

on September 21, 2010

Oh, how I miss cottage cheese! This sounds tasty.

on September 23, 2010

CC with fresh tomatoes, cucumber, salt and pepper!

on September 25, 2010

I put on Wasa crackers with some sliced grape tomatoes and red pepper flakes. For something sweet, I make a "danish" - take lightly toasted lite bread, top with cottage cheese and a thin layer of brown sugar on top then send through another toast cycle. I sometimes use SF jam instead of the brown sugar too. Yum!!

Hi everyone,

Might sound odd but my family and I eat apple butter on our cottage cheese. Very good!

on February 28, 2011

I have never thought of mixing cottage cheese with something sweet like cinnamon. However, I was raised eating it with peaches or pears. Lately, I have been mixing in some garlic powder and green bell peppers. Yum!

on July 13, 2011

I noticed someone mentioned Wasa. This delicious cottage cheese idea would make a great spread for crispbread! I am currently working with their social media team and their Facebook page hosts a "Snackspiration" contest where people suggest delicious toppings for Wasa. I think you should share this recipe on the page: http://www.facebook.com/wasa?sk=app_4949752878

A tablespoon of my favorite jam, or preserves makes cottage cheese seem like a dessert! Even sugar-free or no sugar added taste great and are satisfying.

on August 8, 2011

I just tried some with fresh black pepper and salted sunflower seeds. It was pretty good and lots of protein!

on September 20, 2011

I make a "danish" with toasted bread, cottage mixed with a little sweetener, cinnamon. Put under the broiler till hot and bubbly. yum!

on November 14, 2011

I don't really care for cottage cheese so I make a version of banana pudding. I combine cottage cheese and vanilla greek yogurt (equal parts) with cinnamon, one banana, a dash of vanilla, and a bit of honey in a food processor. I let it set for about 15 minutes. It's really tasty and the greek yogurt is still low cal and high protien!

I needed some new ideas for eating my cottage cheese - man did I find some here! Came here via Pinterest. I like mine mixed with Sugar Free jello powder - sweet. But I am going to try some of the savory options mentioned.

Wow...reading this way after the fact, but low-fat cottage cheese has always been a standby for me.

I'm with Michele and the apple butter. In my family, that was the only way to have it.

Then I saw a recipe in a cookbook that can help you get some extra healthy fat in if you need it. It's excellent. Add half a teaspoon of extra virgin olive oil, some chives or dill, and chopped tomato. I always throw on some fresh ground pepper too. The tomatoes make it refreshing and the oil cuts the tang of the cottage cheese that I think a lot of folks don't like.

Bon apetit!

on February 25, 2012

my favorite snack is cantaloupe with cottage cheese and I sprinkle some ground flax seeds on top. Yum. Meriem

Cows went surfing-you are so funny! I love cottage cheese too! I can't wait to try this-going to the store today-yeah!

on August 22, 2012

Hi Lisa,

Cottage cheese and pears with celery sticks used to be a DESSERT when I was a kid. Since dessert was necessary to have every night according to my dad, my mom tried to come up with some healthier ones to change things up. I love this article! Thanks for writing.

Island Farms 4% cootage cheese on the Canadian West Coast mixed with cold tomatoe juice. Sounds bad but try it. You will love it

on September 17, 2012

I love this idea for me and my daughter for a snack or a sandwich filler. Cottage cheese is not a thing here in Barcelona (it's hard to comeby too) but im going to pass it on to mummys for a healthy kids afterschool snack! thanks

I love this idea. I normally add pineapple but im gonna try this for my daughter, she's 4. A nice alternative sandwhich filler or dip.

on October 6, 2012

When working in a restaurant I would put cottage cheese on the salad bar and found people would pass up the cottage cheese until I started mixing in dry sugar free jello. People then loved it and I always ran out and had to make more. Better yet, add some fruit that matches your jello flavor, such as strawberries with strawberry jello. Love it!

on November 8, 2012

I like the CC Doubles they sell, can't think of the brand off hand. But it's CC and jam of assorted flavors and only 100 Calories! :) But I'm looking for new ways to eat CC, the Doubles are the only way I've eaten it. Don't like it plain.

on December 28, 2012

The apple butter is actually delicious! I just tried it, Thanks Michele!

on January 21, 2013

I keep a jar of unsweetened grapefruit slices in the fridge. Top cottage cheese with grapefruit, salt and pepper. Might sound strange, but tastes great!

on January 28, 2013

I prefer ricotta cheese to cottage cheese. I use 1/2 cup low fat or fat free ricotta, 1/2 tablespoon dried cranberries and cinnamon with a pinch of sugar. Sometimes I'll add a teaspoon of mini chocolate chips.

on June 25, 2013

Last year or so or maybe longer by now, in Israel there was an outcry by the public dubbed the 'Cottage Cheese revolution' - they were outraged at the rising cost of things, including dairy and their beloved cottage cheese! It worked, prices were not raised at that time and everyone eats well. There are great dairy products and the best produce there....just an interesting tidbit.

on September 16, 2013

I love cottage cheese. I mix in a snack size container of mandarin orange slices (packed in water) and some cinnamon. Sometimes I'll throw in some walnuts. Delicious!

on October 15, 2013

My teens and I love avocado with a dash of salt added to cottage cheese! My husband likes yogurt and berries added.
