Top Ten Budget Healthy Snacks 2012

It seems like every visit to the grocery store is a shock. You want to charge me how much for those crackers?

Inexpensive Healthy Snacks

Now, we have a drought on our hands that is epic. The USDA is predicting substantial food price increases in 2013 if not sooner (Food Navigator).

Our choices are to play the lottery, get a higher paying job, or buy food that costs less. (I’m kidding about the lottery.)

It is important not to sacrifice quality just because you are broke. The cheapest and healthiest snack foods are beans, popcorn, and eggs. Potato chips, while cheap, are not included on this list.

Keep in mind that nuts are best in small quantities and are a nutritional powerhouse. One pound of almonds ($9) can go a long way if you are sticking to a one ounce portion (56 cents per portion).

This list is a group of snacks that are healthy, easy to make, and most are less expensive per portion than buying a small bag of Doritos:

How do you stop the chickpeas from popping like popcorn in the oven?

Wow, what great snacks! I love it!

Great ideas!

I tried these last weekend, sorry to say, my husband thought they were AWFUL ! Well, at least he tried them. I thought they were ok.

I am not looking forward to those price increases -- thanks for the ideas

Thanks for this list! I agree that nuts are a great snack food if you stick to the portion sizes. I buy them and then use snack bags to divvy them up into 100 calorie portions to grab and go. I don't use the whole canister, but put it way in the back of my pantry...

Apple slices with cookie dough dip! YUM!!

Hmmm, I tried this recipe and must have done something wrong. A few were crispy but the rest were just cold, mushy garbanzo beans. But they looked like they were about to burn. Also, I didn't get much "flavor" from them. I hate wasting food so not sure if I'll try these again or not. Great idea though. I'm just a terrible cook.

What kind of corn and peas can we eat. They said no sweet corn.
