Why is this baby upset? He is about to join the 42 million Americans that will travel for Thanksgiving.

Road Trip Snacks

(and he has a wet diaper)

Yes, we are back at this time of year and it is time to REV up your engines. If you are lucky, you can take a bus, train, or airplane to your destination instead of sitting in a car for hours on end.

Many of us will be behind the wheel on the way to Grandma's house and the temptation to stop at fast food spots will be unbearable. Save up those calories for pecan pie and pack some healthy snacks!

What do I recommend? Make sure you bring something you will eat as opposed to something that you think you should eat. After driving by 50 McDonald's, Burger Kings, Starbucks, etc., you will lose your will power UNLESS you have packed something you love.

Here are my top travel snacks for the road divided into two categories. Things you make before you go if you have time and healthy snacks you can buy.

To make:

1. newenergyb A Grab 'N Go Breakfast With ZERO Added Sugar (and you will love it)

2. diyyogurtb Save Money, Calories, and the Environment with this Yogurt

3. parmesanpocornb The Cheapest And Healthiest Snack In The Snack Aisle

4. peanutbutterballsb Wow Your Friends With The World's Simplest Cookie Recipe

To buy:

5. ghiradellib Need Some Intense Dark Twilight Delight?

6. sahaleb A Magical and Healthy Packaged Snack

7. dolefruitb A Healthy Packaged Snack For Your Lunch Box

8. cheese stick The Benefits of Cheese Sticks

9. cocoaalmondb A Nutritious, Nutty, and Chocolately 100 Calorie Snack

10. Try some of my favorite bars - gnu bars, KIND, and LARABAR.

What do you pack for road trips?

When we went to visit my family a few weeks ago, I bought a bunch of pre-cut fruit from Whole Foods for the road trip. Of course, this doesn't work for the driver. My husband ate ice cream and beef jerky. :)

KIND bars are my favorite snack - but I have to limit how many I pack or I will eat them all. Yum! Of course, apples and peanut butter always hit the spot too.

I love Peeled Organic dried fruit. They are sweet, simple, and don't contain any preservatives or junk. I also buy the single serve packages so I can control portions.

Let's see...

* Apples always work

* baby carrots (have you tried them with regular mustard? YUM!)

* beef jerky.

* a protein bar, in case meal times get messed up (as is often the case when flying).

* This year, I think I'm going to pack some of the FiberOne 90-calorie brownies--a portion-controlled sweet fix that might keep me from other indulgences.

* Sometimes I just pack some slices of (Food for Life's Ezekiel) Cinnamon Raisin Bread. Sweet, fiber-filled, and filling.

* Laughing Cow Light Baby Bels travel well and are a nice protein hit.

Dang, I'm starting to sound like a snack-girl myself! :o)

I like packing the individual packets of Almond Butter. It's peanut-free and gluten-free. My daughter squeezes it on apple slices and my son eats it straight. Plus it's compact and easy to east anywhere.

What I find easy to carry any where is the Fiber One Granola Bars in Mocha (choc & coffee). They fill you up and are only 2 pts on WW. When my older daughter was a toddler, I usually put out a bowl of Cheerios, raisins & mini-marshmallows. It was convenient and filling. You can use the 1/2 lb margarine containers. They travel well and are cheap. Also, mini peanut butter & jelly (Polaner all fruit) sandwich on whole wheat work well. What I learned as an aide in a special ed program was that paper is a natural insulater!

I just bring my portion controlled non-gmo vegan dairy free soy free etc snacks in a little tote or throw in my purse since they are Pre packaged it is simple and smart choice. Great choice for moms with kids or busy folks in general. Snackhealthy.com/NatalieTerrell check it out they are awesome and really fits this snacking need we have.
